Business 1 on 1 with Dianne Giles, co-owner of Yesterday's Antique Market
Dianne Giles, co-owner of Yesterday's Antique Market, 4821 Sheraton Drive, 474-1566. It is a family-owned business run mostly by Giles and her son, Brandon Giles, with occasional help from her husband, Donnie. The business is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
How long have you been in business?: When Giles and her husband closed another business in the building, "we had this great retail property and we wanted to do something with it. ... My husband was ready to retire and I was not, so we're doing my passion now.
The antique market was created about three years ago. Giles had been a vendor at other stores off and on for 20 years. There are more than 100 vendors at the market, and each has their own store in their booth. Giles even has a booth.
"We found a way to make a living at something I love. (Her husband) helps me as much as he can and my son is very involved. ... This is my passion. ... I love what I do."
What do you like best about your job?: "I love making people happy. ... I love to talk to people about memories. ... I love my vendors, too. It's a people-oriented business. I love making people happy when they find something they want ... to be able to fill a need."
What is your specialty?: "If all we sold is antiques, we would go out of business. ... The younger generation likes the recycling. ... We sell a lot of things. We are upscale -- we are not a flea market. We have a lot of home furnishings and tools."
What are your future plans?: "Well, to continue on the same path and grow."
Since the building is on a nearly 9-acre site, they may look at renting some of the property to other businesses or may install storage buildings.
