Landscaping and construction business seeks to rezone Sardis Church Road site in south Macon.

A landscaping and construction business wants to rezone a parcel on Sardis Church Road to put a shop with parking and storage.

The company, Macon-based Deep South Landscaping and Construction LLC, has applied with the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission to rezone 4771 Sardis Church Road from an agriculture district to a planned development commercial district.

The .82-acre site is about one-fourth mile east of Skipper Road.

The applicant plans to develop a contractor's shop, storage, parking and staging area for a landscaping and construction business, according to a letter submitted to the commission from Alan Cardwell with Deep South.

"At present, there is no plan for retail or consumer presence on property," the letter states.

The commission's staff report indicates concerns about the proposal.

"The proposed land use is permitted in industrial zones and is not consistent with the homes, church and agriculture fields that exist and are envisioned for the area," the report states. "Since the applicant proposes a use and zoning that is inconsistent with existing nearby land uses and those envisioned in the 2040 Future Land Use Plan ... the proposed rezoning appears to meet the definition of a spot zoning. ... It does not appear that the proposed land use meets the intended outcomes of a Planned Development zoning."

The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. in the 10th floor conference room, Willie C. Hill Government Center Annex, 682 Cherry St.
