Downtown Macon outdoors store announces it will close at the end of the year
Ocmulgee Outfitters, a locally owned outdoors store in downtown Macon, announced Wednesday that it would be closing, according to a Facebook post.
The closure marks the end of a six-year run for the business, which sells gear for camping, fishing, hiking and other outdoor activities. It is set to close at the end of the year, the post said.
“This store has been one of my greatest challenges and proudest accomplishments,” the post said. “What started as a run-down convenience store was transformed into a beautiful retail space filled with outdoor treasures — a dream come true.”
Ocmulgee Outfitters first opened in November 2019. Owner Tanya Williams told The Telegraph she wanted to make people in Macon more aware of the outdoor spaces around them, and to serve a niche in the community she felt was being ignored.
“I just felt like the outdoor industry was under-represented in Macon, and not only was it under-represented for retail, but it’s under-represented for opportunities,” Williams said.
The store encouraged customers to visit their storefront on Poplar Street for sales on merchandise and to say goodbye.
