Another Walgreens is closing in Macon. Here’s what we know.
A Walgreens in west Macon will close in a few days, leaving just two locations left in the city.
Signs posted Friday outside the Walgreens at 4305 Mercer University Drive said it will permanently close at 12 p.m. on May 21.
The store will remain open until then, but several shelves were already cleared out by Friday.
“Your prescriptions can be accessed at any Walgreens,” a sign said. “Simply call the Walgreens of your choice or visit Walgreens.com/Pharmacy.”
The only other Walgreens locations open in Macon are at 3888 Vineville Ave. and 6035 Zebulon Road.
All staff at the Mercer University Drive location, including Bernadine Ortega, a shift lead, will be transferred to the other locations in Macon and Warner Robins, she said.
“Everyone kept their jobs,” Ortega said, while smiling behind a register. “I’ll be in Warner Robins, which is actually better for me. I live in Warner Robins.”
Another employee, Sharika Stephens, was clearing out handfuls of gift cards off the racks Friday afternoon.
Sherrell Brown, 63, said she’ll miss having quick access to a nearby, affordable drugstore. She lives right behind the Walgreens.
“I come here for their makeup, because they usually have good prices,” Brown said, while pushing a cart of beauty products. “And I have used the pharmacy to get my immunization shots.”
After Wednesday, she’ll only have one other place to shop for household items like makeup: Walmart at 5955 Zebulon Road.
“It would be nice if they put a little grocery store here or something,” Brown said.
Two other Walgreens in Macon have closed since 2020, including at 2495 Pio Nono Ave., and 1280 Gray Highway.
