Georgia gas prices increased sharply this week. Will cost keep rising into summer?
Gas prices have spiked $0.11 per gallon in the last week, inching closer and closer to March’s record high. According to the AAA average gas price index, the current average gas price in Macon is $3.78, compared to last week’s $3.70.
Patrick De Haan of Gasbuddy.com said Georgia is one of only 15 states with average gas prices below $4 per gallon. He expects the increases to start slowing down again soon, “I think we’re somewhere in the 7th inning stretch.”
As of Friday, the average price for gas in the Peach state was $3.79, well below the national average of $4.27 per gallon. With some of the highest gas prices in the state, Middle Georgia counties are doing more to raise the average than most counties. One gruesome exception is Taliaferro County, which had the highest average price in the state, $4.03.
Here are the average prices for regular unleaded fuel per county in the Macon area, as of 3 p.m. Friday:
Houston County: $3.73
Peach County: $3.74
Bibb County: $3.77
Macon: $3.86
Crawford County: $3.96
This time last year, gas prices were $2.73 per gallon in Georgia. Experts say a variety of factors could keep gas prices high for the next few months, including summer tourism and ongoing tension with Russia over the invasion of Ukraine.
