Gas prices shatter state record in Georgia. How much you’ll pay in Columbus, Macon.

Gas prices continue to skyrocket across the country and Georgia residents are seeing no end in sight.

Georgia gas prices have hit a new record, as the state average is now at $4.26 a gallon. This is the highest recorded state average ever and is just a few cents below the national average of $4.31.

For nearly 14 years, the state’s record remained at $4.16 a gallon in July of 2008, following Hurricane Ike.

Georgia’s average has been on a steady incline. Just one week ago, the state average price for gas was $3.60. Georgia had one of the biggest weekly rises in the country, according to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, with the support of the General Assembly, has plans to suspend the state gas tax, which would save Georgians 29.1 cents per gallon.

“With this latest measure, we are making it even more clear that in Georgia we are going to empower families to keep their money in their own pockets,” Kemp said.

The measure would be a temporary suspension and with no announced timeline, it is not clear when the suspension would begin.

According to the AAA website, Atlanta, Brunswick, and Gainesville remain the most expensive places to fill up in Georgia, while Columbus, Dalton and Catoosa-Dade-Walker are the most affordable places to get gas today.
