Unemployed restaurant, retail workers can apply for 1,000 jobs in Macon. Here’s how:
A Middle Georgia employment agency is looking for unemployed restaurant, hospitality and retail workers to fill around 1,000 positions at local companies.
Spherion Staffing, with offices in Dublin and Byron, plans to hire 800-1,000 people for temporary, light warehouse jobs.
“A lot of times people think warehouse work is arduous, hot, sweaty, heavy lifting, those types of things. Many of these jobs are more of a very light warehouse job, so someone who has maybe been displaced that was a restaurant worker or a hospitality worker or in the retail sector, and they found themselves without a job….. The skills that they had in those positions could very well be transferable over to something like this,” said Michael Chalmers, franchise owner of Spherion Staffing.
Chalmers wouldn’t specify which companies he was hiring for, although he said they are well-respected names within the Middle Georgia community.
The full-time positions range in pay from $10-$14 per hour, and those hired will have an opportunity to gain full-time employment with the companies at which they work, Chalmers said.
As temporary employees with Spherion, they will receive medical benefits and in some cases, increased holiday pay, Chalmers said.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, Chalmers said online shopping was already popular, but he said the pandemic seems to have accelerated the process of hiring seasonal workers for the holidays.
“Normally, we do this business pretty heavily in the fourth quarter because of the Christmas season, but we have been seeing upticks in this area of business since May,” he said.
Spherion partners with its customers to ensure safety guidelines are followed for the safety of their employees, Chalmers said. Some of the guidelines include social distancing, providing masks and increased sanitation, he said.
“That’s paramount for us to make sure not only that our employees are safe from workplace injury, but are protected against what’s going on right now in our country with coronavirus,” he said.
