Inside Wilmington NC Travel Scene: What Families Should Know Before Visiting
The first thing I realized about Wilmington wasn't something you can point to on a map. It was how seamlessly everything came together. From where we stayed to where we ate and explored, every part of our trip felt thoughtfully connected. As a parent, that kind of ease doesn't happen by accident.
It’s a coastal destination that works so well for families because there’s so much to do beyond the beach. Wilmington is more than pretty views; it’s a destination that welcomes families, and the family-friendly things to do in Wilmington NC are surprisingly fun for parents, too. There's a plethora of ways to make memories.

Experience Wilmington From Different Viewpoints
- The setup: Historic downtown Wilmington sits on the Cape Fear River. The famous Wilmington Riverwalk lines the river with shops, cafes and local tour operators.
- My recommendation: Instead of navigating the city on your own, I recommend two vastly different perspectives to see Wilmington. Explore by boat or by a horse-drawn carriage, and the kids will dial in.
Wilmington Water Tours
- The only locally-owned boat tour operator in the city.
- The family-owned company prides itself on eco-tours that blend education and history.
- Pick from specialty cruises that showcase the city's famous film locations or history with a professor onboard…
- …but I recommend one of the 50-minute daily cruises to Eagle's Island . It's the perfect amount of time for kids and includes information about the Riverwalk and the riverbank's natural features.
Springbrook Farms Horse-Drawn Carriage Tour
- Opt for this if your family prefers upfront views of Wilmington's downtown historic architecture .
- It's a leisurely and charming way to see the city's oldest buildings, learn about the area's history and even hear about a few spirits.
- Unlike a nighttime ghost tour, this is a kid-friendly tour for all ages.
Play at Hands-on Wilmington Museums That Welcome Kids
Children’s Museum of Wilmington
- For little ones with big imaginations, head here.
- Geared towards kids ages 1-10, it's a place where they can explore and be creative.
- From STEM-focused exhibits to a dedicated space just for toddlers, the entire museum is engaging.
- I recommend the Children's Museum for rainy days or to escape the North Carolina heat.
Wilmington Railroad Museum
- Train enthusiasts appreciate this museum, which highlights the city's locomotive history with artifacts from the mid-1800's to the present.
- Kids love touring the real train cars that sit permanently outside the museum and playing in the hands-on kids’ area with train tables.
- However, I think the museum's biggest highlight is the model train room, which holds a world record for its size. With every look, you'll notice more tiny details you missed before.
Walk Onboard The U.S.S. North Carolina For WWII History
- The background: The Battleship North Carolina is the most decorated battleship from WWII and now sits in the Cape Fear River as a towering beacon over downtown Wilmington.
- The experience: The Battleship North Carolina fought in every South Pacific battle during WWII, but today tourists can walk on board for self-guided tours. It brings the Greatest Generation's history to life for kids.
- My observation: Unlike museums dedicated exclusively to kids, the battleship doesn't have many hands-on areas, but walking through the ship still captivates kids. See the inner workings of the ship, learn about a friendly-fire incident that left a major impact, and walk through rooms that exemplify what life was like during wartime.
SheBuysTravel Tip:The U.S.S. North Carolina doesn't have air conditioning. Plan to visit in the morning, before the heat, for the most enjoyable experience.
Family-Friendly Wilmington NC Restaurants
Getting Around: Most of the historic downtown Wilmington area is walkable. Park in one of the city's public garages and walk between attractions. There are plenty of great restaurants within a few blocks of the Wilmington Riverwalk.
These are my favorite kid-friendly restaurant picks:
- Front Street Brewery: Wash down their famous pulled chicken nachos or burgers with a cold one, while kids pick from classics they know and love.
- Marina Grill: Offers waterfront views, indoor and outdoor seating, fresh seafood and steaks, and is still kid-friendly.
- Michael's Seafood Restaurant: If you're heading to the beach, stop by this Carolina Beach favorite that's known for its chowder and fresh catch of the day.
Where to Stay With Kids in Wilmington NC
The Strategy: Wilmington and its nearby beaches offer several great family-friendly lodging options, from unique to beachside and budget-friendly. Location is everything, and you'll want to stay downtown for the city's museums. If family beach days are a must, pick beachside resorts that are a quick drive to downtown Wilmington. Either way, you can't go wrong.
Here is my list of favorites:
- The Cove Riverwalk Villas: One of the city's most distinctive stays, these family-friendly houseboats offer home-like amenities and the best views of the Cape Fear River.
- Holiday Inn Resort Lumina: On Wrightsville Beach, this oceanfront resort includes family suites and several on-site dining options for convenience.
- Hotel Lela: A great location between the beaches and downtown Wilmington, the Hotel Lela offers a beautiful pool for families and digital sports simulators that kids love.
SheBuysTravel Tip:The winter months offer the best hotel rates, and there's still plenty for families to enjoy beyond the beach.
