AC Pup invites community to pet show that's celebrating 60 years in Macon

Can you believe it's time for the annual pet show with the Museum of Arts and Sciences? That's right, it will be next Sunday, April 24, from 2-4:30 p.m. My goodness, time flies. This is one of my favorite events with free admission, and this year is really special.

This year we'll be celebrating the museum's 60th year of organizing this fun. Yes, the museum has been doing the mutt strut for 60 years -- with bunnies and birds and kitties and turtles. Every imaginable pet has been seen at the museum's annual event, and I'll bet this year will be no different. There was even an alligator there last year!

Sixty years is an incredible amount of time to host any event, so I extend my congratulations to the museum for this milestone. Shoot, we might even see grandchildren of the first set of kids that were toting bundles of fur around 60 years ago.

It's also the second year the pet show will be held on the campus of Coliseum Northside Hospital and the second year my nonprofit animal welfare group, Central Georgia CARES, and I will be there offering a low-cost vaccine clinic and food drive for dogs and cats.

If it's time to have your fur babies' booster shots updated, this will be an event you won't want to miss. We'll be giving booster shots and rabies shots. It will cost $10 for each shot for dogs, and kitty shots will be $20. These prices to get your babies current on their shots are great. It would surprise me if you found lower prices anywhere else.

We'll be out on the lawn of Coliseum Northside Hospital where there is tons of space. In addition to the low-cost vaccine, we'll have games, treats, vendors, low-cost pet vaccines and something for everyone! It's going to be so much fun!

Because CARES helps needy people and hungry pets, we're asking for you to bring 20-pound bags (we can't lift anything heavier) of Pedigree dog food and bags of Nine Lives kitty food to donate to CARES. This will help CARES provide for hungry dogs and cats throughout Middle Georgia.

The actual pet contest at the show is going to be so much fun. You'll need to register your pet at 2 p.m. while judging begins at 3 p.m. Bring $2 with you since that will be the charge for the registration.

A couple of very important notes: Please make sure you bring your pet on a leash with a non-slip collar. If you're not sure what kind that is, run on out to PetSmart and ask them for a martingale collar. Those are really safe ones you can get.

If you're bringing a kitty, duck, pig or any smaller animal, please make sure they're secured in a locked carrier. It's also a good idea to keep the dogs separated from them as well just so everyone stays happy.

Make sure you mark you calendars to come out with me to the pet show. Grab your bags of dog and cat food and come see me. I'll be looking for you!
