Well, plenty of people drive with their pets unrestrained for various reasons. Maybe they forgot your pet carrier, just got a new pup or perhaps their furry friend is full of anxiety during car rides.
Your pet may be calmer when snug in your lap, but you ignore the danger in doing so.
According to Pawsafe, 80% of dog owners drive around with their dogs unrestrained in the vehicle.
And in a 2019 study by Volvo, dangerous driving habits double when drivers have unrestrained pets in the car.
So, is it even legal in Georgia to drive with a pet in your lap or unrestrained in your vehicle?

Is it illegal?
No; there is currently no law in place making it illegal to drive with a dog in your lap in the state of Georgia.
However, there are distracted driving laws in Georgia.
Distracted driving includes anything that distracts or prevents you from safely driving your vehicle and yes, pets in the car can be one of those things.
Why it’s dangerous
Although it isn’t illegal, driving with your pets in your lap or having unrestrained pets in your car can still be highly dangerous to you, others and your pet.
According to Montlick Injury Attorneys in Georgia, there are several ways your unrestrained pet can be a risk:
• The pet may be injured in a collision
• The animal may climb on your lap and obstruct your vision
• The pet may engage in activity that is distracting
• Animals become flying projectiles if they are not restrained during a collision
• The pet may interfere with rescue attempts by emergency responders
Tip for driving with pets
If you need to travel with your pet short or long distances, it is recommended to do the following:
• Strap in a pet carrier with a seat belt
• Use dog seat belts
• Get a mobile pet bed
