Check out holiday open house at Save A Pet

I recently told you about Pooh, the amazing rescue dog Bill and Alicia Klenk adopted. The Klenks previously had purebred dogs, two female bichons and a male Akita.

Unfortunately, the two bichons went to heaven leaving Kodi, the Akita, alone and sad. So the Klenks set out to find Kodi a companion and decided on the scruffy rescue they named Pooh. This was their first experience with a rescue dog.

They were so taken with Pooh’s personality and wonderful spirit they wrote a book about him and what he must have felt being abandoned and left in a high-kill shelter. It’s title is “Rescue: A Dog’s Journey.”

Bill is the author and Alicia, who is an accomplished artist, is the illustrator. Their combined talents brought Pooh’s story to life.

Today the Klenks will be in Monroe County at Save A Pet’s Holiday Open House from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. signing their books. They will also donate a portion of their proceeds to help animal rescue groups spotlighted on their website, www.rescuepoohdog.com.

Save A Pet is a nonprofit volunteer organization in Forsyth whose mission is to protect and improve the lives of abandoned, abused and homeless dogs and to place them in loving homes. They have achieved their dream of building their own shelter in a beautiful setting at 618 Maynard Church Road where their adoptable dogs are located.

They are hosting a Holiday Open House today to invite the public in to see their fabulous shelter, enjoy a bake sale, silent auction and raffle. The public can enjoy a free sandwich and drink, and they are invited to shop in Fido’s Closet.

During the tour of the facility, Save A Pet volunteers would love for you to meet the wonderful dogs waiting to find their own families. There are fabulous dogs of all sizes, so chances are you can meet the dog of your dreams at Save A Pet. Most of the dogs were saved from the local municipal shelter, Monroe County Animal Control.

While you’re there, look for Sammy, the sweet chow/lab mix with the very kind eyes. He’s good with kids and even likes cats. He would really like to spend Christmas with his new family.

Or maybe you’ll see Podee, the Great Pyrenees/Border collie mix who could be the perfect new family member. He’s a little shy and reserved at first, but once he gets to know you, there’s no dog more loyal. Show him a place to swim, and he’ll be a friend for life.

There are many more fantastic rescues to meet at Save A Pet. Please come to see for yourself.

If you’ve never had a rescue before you may be interested to know that most rescued pets realize they’ve been given a second chance and spend the rest of their lives showing gratitude for their adoption. I should know.

Come on out today to see the shelter, the fabulous dogs and get your autographed copy of “Rescue: A Dog’s Journey.” You’ll have a great time and maybe meet a furbaby you can’t live without.
