Cultural experiences abound in Middle Georgia

Middle Georgians have plenty of options when it comes to exploring the fine arts locally. Visual art of all media can be found within a short drive, and the performing arts abound for the old, young and every age in between.

BIBB COUNTY

Theatre Macon

438 Cherry St., Macon. 478-746-9485. www.theatremacon.com. Box office hours: 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday, beginning the Monday prior to the opening of a show, and also open one hour prior to each performance. Unless otherwise noted, individual tickets to Theatre Macon mainstage productions are $20 general admission, $18 seniors and $15 students. Theatre Macon produces six major productions each year in its regular season and at least one major summer show. The Youth Actors Company produces three productions each year; auditions are open to youth ages 12-18. YAC show ticket prices are $18 adults and $12 students.

Macon Little Theatre

Wednesday-Saturday shows start at 8 p.m.; Sunday matinees start at 2:30 p.m. $20 adults, $15 seniors, $10 students. The Macon Little Theatre presents several stage plays and musical hits starring area residents.

Cox Capitol Theatre

382 Second St., Macon. 478-257-6391. www.coxcapitoltheatre.com. Admission prices vary by event. The Cox Capitol Theatre operates as a movie house and live entertainment venue.

Grand Opera House

651 Mulberry St., Macon. 478-301-5470. www.thegrandmacon.com. Open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. Admission prices vary by event. The Grand brings live, professional performing arts and entertainment to its stage through the Broadway Series of nationally touring productions as well as a variety of special events throughout the year and the GrandKids Arts Education Series.

Douglass Theatre

355 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Macon. 478-742-2000. www.douglasstheatre.org. 10 a.m-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. Admission prices vary by event. The historic Douglass Theatre provides multicultural events and films as well as educational performances for area schoolchildren.

The Gallery at Macon Arts Alliance

486 First St., Macon. 478-743-6940. www.maconartsalliance.org. Gallery hours: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, 5-8 p.m. First Friday of each month. Free. The gallery exhibits and sells work by local artists working in pottery, painting, jewelry, photography, sculpture, fabric arts and more.

Middle Georgia Art Association

2330 Ingleside Ave., Macon. 478-744-9557. www.middlegeorgiaart.org. Noon-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and noon-3 p.m. Saturday. Free. MGAA hosts exhibits featuring art in a variety of media produced by local artists as well as a Holiday Artists’ Market, the Winter Arts Festival and the Mulberry Street Arts and Crafts Festival.

Museum of Arts and Sciences

4182 Forsyth Road, Macon. 478-477-3232. www.masmacon.org. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5-$10. The museum features art and science exhibitions, the Mark Smith Planetarium and observatory, a mini-zoo, the Discovery House with interactive exhibits, nature trails and more.

The 567 Center for Renewal

533 Cherry St., Macon. 478-238-6051. www.the567.org. Each First Friday, the 567 holds an art opening for a new exhibit from 6-9 p.m. In addition to First Fridays, the gallery is also open by appointment. The 567 hosts monthly exhibits by artists from Middle Georgia and the Southeast.

Tubman Museum

310 Cherry St., Macon. 478-743-8544. www.tubmanmuseum.com. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $6-$10. The museum, now in a new and expanded location, features exhibits of black art, history and culture.

Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

301 Cherry St., Macon. 478-752-1585. www.gshf.org. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. $8 ages 17 and older; $6 seniors, college and military; $3.50 children under 16. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame features exhibits covering the history of sports in a hall of fame that honors more than 300 inductees.

Cannonball House

856 Mulberry St., Macon. 478-745-5982. www.cannonballhouse.org. Tours begin at 11 a.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday. The last tour of the day begins at 3:30 p.m. $6 adults, $5 seniors and military, $3 students. Built in 1853 of Greek Revival architecture, the Cannonball House sustained damage during the Civil War and contains period furnishings and a Civil War military collection.

The Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House

2321 Vineville Ave., Macon. 478-741-5551. www.thebighousemuseum.com. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday-Sunday. $7 adults, $5.75 seniors and military, $3.75 children ages 3-10. The museum showcases guitars, other musical instruments, clothing and memorabilia belonging to the Allman Brothers Band.

Hay House

934 Georgia Ave., Macon. 478-742-8155. www.hayhousemacon.org. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sunday; tours begin on the hour, with the last tour starting at 3 p.m. $11 adults, $10 seniors and military, $7 students, free for children 5 and younger. This mansion built in the mid-1800s was fashioned after the mansions of Florence and Rome.

Sidney Lanier Cottage

935 High St., Macon. 478-743-3851. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, last tour at 3:30 p.m. www.historicmacon.org/sidney-lanier-cottage/visit. $5 adults; $4 seniors, military with ID and AAA members; $3 youth ages 6-18; free for members of Historic Macon Foundation. The Sidney Lanier Cottage Museum is the birthplace of poet, musician and soldier Sidney Lanier.

HOUSTON COUNTY

Warner Robins Little Theatre

502 S. Pleasant Hill Road, Warner Robins. 478-929-4579. www.wrlt.org. All show times: 8 p.m. evening shows or 2:30 p.m. matinees. $16 general admission, $14 students, seniors and military, $10 each in groups of 10 or more. The Warner Robins Little Theatre performs five plays per season.

Perry Players

Evening shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and matinees begin at 2:30 p.m. Reservations taken 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Saturday before a show. $15 adults, $12 seniors, military, students and children. The Perry Players offer community theater and cultural activities.

Museum of Aviation

Ga. 247 at Russell Parkway, Warner Robins. 478-923-6600. www.museumofaviation.org. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Free. On display are more than 90 aircraft and exhibits focusing on aviation history as well as the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame.

BALDWIN COUNTY

Allied Arts/Marlor Arts Center

201 N. Wayne St., Milledgeville. 478-452-3950. www.milledgevillealliedarts.com. Gallery hours: 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, or by appointment. Admission is free. Allied Arts features a gallery for exhibits of visual art as well as providing performing arts, literary arts and general arts education and hosting workshops for adults and summer camps for children.

Old Governor’s Mansion

120 S. Clarke St., Milledgeville. 478-445-4545. www.gcsu.edu/mansion. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 2-4 p.m. Sunday, with tours every hour. Home to Georgia governors from 1838-1868, it was occupied by General Sherman during his March to the Sea and now serves as an historic house museum, an example of Greek Revival architecture.

Old Capital Museum

201 E. Greene St., Milledgeville. 478-453-1803. www.oldcapitalmuseum.org. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday and noon-4 p.m. Saturday. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the Old Capital is where Civil War legislators voted to secede from the Union.

Blackbridge Hall Art Gallery

111 S. Clarke St., Milledgeville. 478-445-4572. www.gcsu.edu/art. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The gallery exhibits the work of contemporary artists and presents Georgia College senior art major exhibitions at the end of each semester.

Andalusia

2628 Columbia St., Milledgeville. 478-454-4029. www.andalusiafarm.org. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday and by appointment. Author Flannery O’Connor’s farm provided the settings, situations and fictional characters for some of her stories. O’Connor lived at the farm from 1951 until her death in 1964, completing two novels and two collections of short stories while living there.

Georgia College Natural History Museum

Herty Hall, Georgia College, Wilkinson Street, Milledgeville. 478-445-2395. www.gcsu.edu/nhm. 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. The museum emphasizes paleontology and features displays of fossils from around the world. The museum is also home to a planetarium.

Georgia College Museum

231 W. Hancock St., Milledgeville. 478-445-8274. www.gcsu.edu/library/museum. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Admission is free. The museum features visual arts exhibitions and educational programs as well as the Flannery O’Connor Room, which includes a tribute to the author’s work.

Museum and Archives of Georgia Education

131 S. Clarke St., Milledgeville. 478-445-4391. Noon-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and by appointment. The museum includes memorabilia following the history of education in the state.

MONROE COUNTY

The Backlot Players at the Rose Theater

23 W. Johnston St., Forsyth. 478-994-0443. www.thebacklotplayers.org. Box office hours: 4-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday during the week of a show and two hours prior to show. $15 adults, $12 senior adults and students. Backlot Players present community theater in a historic venue.

CRAWFORD COUNTY

Middle Georgia Folk Pottery Museum

Old Crawford County Courthouse, Knoxville. 478-836-3825. The museum focuses on the pottery unique to Crawford County and its historical importance to the area.

Museum of Southeastern Indians

779 Julia Jordan Road, Roberta. 478-836-2696. The museum features a collection of items from the American Indians who lived in the Southeast.

Old Jail Museum

100 Commerce Place, Roberta. 770-358-5884. The law enforcement archives of Crawford County are housed in the Old Jail Museum.
