After online confusion, Yay Beignet owner confirms closure in Macon. Here’s what we know
Central Georgia residents have become fond of a unique coffee shop in downtown Macon that dishes out hearty cajun entrees and fluffy beignets.
But the owners of Yay Beignet and Cajun Bistro have decided to close after serving the community for only four months.
Google lists the restaurant, which is located at 442 Cherry St. next to Macon Theatre, as permanently closed.
Restaurant owner George Drake told The Telegraph Wednesday that the eatery is closing because of a nearby construction site affecting business.
“Once the construction site was pushed out in front of our building, it really killed our sales,” Drake said through text message. “We closed Sunday.”
The shop, however, made no social media statements about its closure. Drake said they will be officially announcing the closure soon.
Several Middle Georgia residents recently voiced disappointment online, saying they were surprised to see the place wasn’t open.
“I went last Friday too for lunch and was closed. Drove all the way from Eatonton and was so excited,” one person commented.
Others said that they never had the opportunity to try its food for the first time.
Yay Beignet and Cajun Bistro, which prides itself on serving “the best beignets this side of the Mighty Mississippi,” relocated to Bibb County from its original spot in Atlanta, Drake said.
Google also lists the Atlanta location as permanently closed.
“I wish there were laws to prevent this from happening to businesses in the future,” he said.
