Autumn bliss scalloped apples

6 large baking apples (gala, rome, or winesap), peeled and thinly sliced)

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

5 tablespoons butter

Serves 8.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Spoon apples into a lightly greased casserole. Sprinkle with lemon juice. Combine remaining ingredients and stir until crumbly. Sprinkle mixture over apples. Bake for 40 minutes, stirring well once every 10 minutes or baking.

Note: Serve this as a delicious side dish with roasted poultry or pork , adding 1 cup of sweetened dried cranberries during the winter holidays. Use any leftovers to serve as a topping for French toast or homemade poundcake with vanilla ice cream.
