JAG’s Pizzeria in Macon has closed. Here are other restaurants that closed in 2023
There will be one less pizza joint in Macon next year.
The owners of JAG’s Pizzeria and Pub — Richie Jones, Brian Adams and Ryan Griffin — announced on Wednesday the restaurant officially closed its doors on Dec. 19.
The announcement was made in a Facebook post by the owners.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of JAG’S Pizzeria and Pub. As of December 19, 2023, JAG’S Pizzeria and Pub closed its doors for the last time. This decision was not an easy one to make,” according to the post.
The owners said they would rather keep the restaurant open, but “a number of factors makes that possibility impractical.”
The restaurant opened in 2020 and was located at 1635 Montpelier Avenue in Macon, just steps away from Mercer University in Macon.
The pizza joint was known for its 1990’s themed decor and huge slices of pizza, which the pizzeria boasted were the “biggest in town.” Favorites on the menu included the extra cheesy Cheese Bread, any or all of the calzones and the Piedmont Pulled Pork pizza, featuring delicious pulled pork from Macon’s own Piedmont Brewery and Kitchen.
“Our JAG’S family has a trove of memories to cherish because of all of you,” the owners said on social media.
JAG’s joins a list of restaurants that closed in Macon in 2023:
Nu-Way/Mercer
The famous hot dog joint was located at 1602 Montpelier Avenue in Macon, inside Mercer Village. It closed its doors on Dec. 18. Nu-Way president and co-owner Jim Cacavias said the closing was due to “marginal sales,” and no drive-thru.
The restaurant still has eight other locations in the Macon area.
The Cotton Ranch
This high-end steakhouse opened up at 347 Cotton Avenue in Macon opened over the summer, but closed shortly after.
The Brickhouse Pub and Grub
The Brickhouse, a food, bar and entertainment venue, opened in 2023 at 458 Second Street. It took the place of Macon Beer Company and was owned by the same folks that opened The Cotton Ranch.
Cow Pies Pizza
Cow Pies Pizza opened on Arkwright Road in Macon during the summer, but quickly closed. The restaurant still has a location in Warner Robins on Watson Boulevard.
