Houston County rebounds, blasts Greenbrier
WARNER ROBINS -- Houston County turned in an almost flawless first-half performance as it rolled over Greenbrier and dominated the GHSA Region 2-AAAAA contest on its way to a 50-6 victory Friday night.
"I challenged our guys all week to respond from last week, and they played great," Houston County head coach Von Lassiter said. "They did exactly what we asked them to do. That shows what kind of kids we have, and I just thank God for them."
Coming off of a loss to Jones County that saw the Bears (7-1, 6-1 Region 2-AAAAA) score just 17 points (their lowest total since 2013) Houston County's high-powered offense was in full gear against the Wolfpack.
After a fumble on their opening drive, the Bears scored touchdowns on their final seven possessions of the opening half to take a 50-0 lead to the break. Houston County racked up 490 total yards on 38 plays in the first two quarters.
Tailbacks Khenon Walker and Jaeven West combined to rush 11 times for 102 yards and five touchdowns.
Quarterback and Alabama commitment Jake Fromm completed 21-of-26 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns. He spread the ball around to nine receivers.
"I thought (Fromm) threw the ball well, and I thought he managed the game well," Lassiter said. "He made real good calls on the run-pass combos, and I think his (completion) percentage was up over 70, which is way above where we want it."
The Houston County defense was just as in tune as its offense. Greenbrier (2-6, 1-6) was held to five consecutive three-and-outs to open the game and was limited to minus-10 yards on 14 carries in the first half. The Wolfpack avoided the shutout with a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Houston County travels to Evans on Friday before a big regular-season ending showdown with Northside in two weeks.
