King, Howard roll to big win over FPD
Howard took its passing game to another level Thursday night.
Courvoisier King threw for 286 yards and four touchdowns as the Huskies breezed to a 38-17 victory over FPD at Mercer’s Five Star Stadium.
King, who has 499 passing yards and six touchdowns through the air in two games, also had his second touchdown run of the season as the Huskies improved to 2-0.
Like in its opener against Lamar County, Howard got off to a bit of a slow start. The Huskies trailed for much of the second quarter after FPD quarterback Will McCormick connected on a 14-yard scoring pass to Daniel Weaver.
Howard, however, took advantage of some big pass plays just before halftime and in the second half to open things up.
King connected with Alphonso Stephens for two touchdown passes, upping Stephens’ touchdown total to four on the season. Their 43-yard connection with 1:40 to go in the first half put Howard up 14-7, and a 25-yarder midway through the third quarter gave the Huskies a three-touchdown lead.
They also connected on a 55-yard passing play on the second play of the second half, one that set up a 1-yard scoring run by King.
Stephens finished with four catches for 132 yards, putting him above the 100-yard mark in both of Howard’s games this season.
King also had a 4-yard touchdown pass to JaQwun Stinson in the first quarter and a 57-yard scoring toss to Jerin Means late in the third.
Stinson led Howard’s rushing game with 99 yards on 11 carries. Means had three catches for 120 yards.
Like in its scrimmage two weeks ago against Central, FPD had trouble hanging onto the football at times against Howard. The Vikings had six fumbles, five in the first half, with two of those going for turnovers.
McCormick finished with 115 passing yards, while Armaun Smith ran for 85 yards and a touchdown for the Vikings (0-1).
