'Nip/Tuck' Ends

Tonight marks the end of the FX series "Nip/Tuck."



I can't say I ever watched an episode of this series, which is a little surprising, because I'm a fan of most of the other stuff FX produces.



The show had a cult following for its run, either because of the graphic nature of the show, or in spite of it. It was the graphic nature of the adverts promoting this series about plastic surgery that really turned me off right from the beginning.



A lot of people did tune in initially, however. But as the years wore on, the show grew more and more over the top, alienating both critics and fans alike. It's kind of recurring issue with programs that are soap opera in nature -- series like "Grey's Anatomy" and "Desperate Housewives" have lost fans over the years due to more outrageous plotlines.



For me, I'm glad "Nip/Tuck" is going, if for no other reason than it gives creator Ryan Murphy a chance to focus 100 percent of his energy on his other series, "Glee."



WEDNESDAY'S BEST BETS: Happily, with the Olympics over, the ABC sitcoms are back and new tonight. It's followed by Oprah Winfrey's Oscar special at 10 p.m.



CBS is all-new with "Old Christine," "Gary Unmarried," "Criminal Minds" and "CSI: NY."



Fox has two hours of "American Idol," beginning at 8 p.m., while NBC is new with "Mercy," followed by two hours of "L&O: SVU."



On cable, there's a new "Psych" at 10 p.m., as is the wickedly funning "The In-Betweeners" (BBC America, 9:30 p.m.)
