You’ve had the wings at Francar’s — now try brunch

Francar’s has been serving up wings for decades now, but the restaurant has started something new at its Mercer Village location in Macon’s Beall’s Hill neighborhood: Sunday brunch.

It’s nothing fancy — mostly different combinations of waffles, pancakes, sausage, bacon, fried chicken, eggs and French toast. But if you want a new place to brunch on a Sunday, this could be your ticket.

Probably the most “Francar’s” offering is the chicken and waffles, with big boneless pieces of white meat and your choice of one or two fluffy waffles. If it’s too early for chicken for you, the bacon and sausage are both very tasty.

The French toast was very dark but had a nice thickness to it. The batter is quite sweet, so we didn’t add any syrup. Strawberries can be added to anything for 79 cents.

The most unusual dish is the Mardi Gras fish and grits, with a large piece of fried fish atop a pile of plain or cheese grits. Add a little hot sauce and you’ve got enough fuel to take on the remainder of the weekend.

If you want to keep it simple, try an egg and cheese biscuit for just $1.95, or a biscuit with sausage or bacon for just $3.39 (or chicken for $3.99). If you want one of Francar’s famous sauces, it can be added it to your biscuit for another 79 cents.

If you want to pretend you’re at home without having to cook, get the Square Bear, with grits, eggs, bacon or sausage, and toast or biscuit for just $4.59. Tea or lemonade is included with every meal price.

Francar’s has become a neighborhood favorite, and Mercer University students will be back soon for the new school year. Come try it out before it gets too busy.
