Gray might not be known for its Mexican fare, but we visited a spot far back on the main road that is a pleasant place for good quality food.

Agave Azul, named for the base ingredient in tequila, is similar to other area Mexican restaurants with a few exceptions: their attentive service and certain menu items.

Our glasses were always filled and our questions were given thoughtful consideration. After our dinner, a manager came over to check on our service and to suggest dessert options.

Their homemade guacamole has only fresh avocados, onions, tomatoes, cilantro and lime juice — as it should be (many restaurants add sour cream to stretch it out). We also enjoyed the Texas dip, with shrimp, grilled chicken, steak and melted cheese for $9.99.

Our favorite entree was the street tacos for $10.59, served elegantly on two long white plates, one with several small tortillas topped with steak, chicken, shrimp and/or pork; the other plate held beans, onions and extra cilantro.

We ordered the fajitas as a baseline and they were everything you would expect but only cost $15.59 for a very generous amount of steak, chicken, shrimp, pork and chorizo. Even though it was for one, we took much of it home for a friend. The Rolling Chicken was interesting: a whole chicken breast rolled around onions and mushrooms for $10.99. The new chipotle chicken dish seemed to be in experimentation stages but was relatively healthy served over lettuce for $10.99.

Other interesting choices include Mrs. Judy’s Papa Rellena, the El Gigante burrito and the Mar y Tierra.

Look for special deals like “Two for $20” with an appetizer and two entrees on Monday though Thursday, and “Kids Eat Free” after 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
