Ocean Crab House, off of Mercer University Dr., is a fried shrimp lover’s dream. Tender, with just enough batter to give it crunch, this is some of the best fried shrimp in the area.

An 8 piece plate with fries is only $5.99 at lunch, or get a 15 piece with fries for $9.99 any time of day. We got the Family Platter with 35 shrimp for $21.99. These are fast food prices for much higher quality food, nearly as fast.

Our other fried food was also good — three pieces of catfish with two sides for $8.99 (we think we got shorted a piece, but it was still a good deal), about 25 fantastic small scallops for $10.99, and two not-homemade crabcakes for just $3.99. They also have fried oysters and combo plates.

Sides include plain or seasoned fries, garlic corn, garlic eggs, garlic bread, a garlic potato, hush puppies, cheese sticks, or fried okra. You must order fried food within one hour of closing, but their late hours make this very do-able.

Perhaps the most interesting part of their operation is the non-fried items. Shrimp, corn, eggs, potatoes, sausage, crab legs, and blue crab has been boiled in low country spices, waiting to be purchased in the front refrigerated counter.

Once you select your items, the super friendly and funny owner puts them in a styrofoam container, squirts liquid garlic butter all over it, generously dusts it all with more seasoning, and ... microwaves it. When I watched this happening, I thought, “No way this can be any good.” But it was.

He has figured out just how done to boil everything so that when it is microwaved, it will come out al dente.

If you’re tired of paying huge prices for sub-par seafood, you need to try Ocean Crab House. You can ever order on Waitr for just a $5 upcharge if you’d rather not leave the house for a meal. Either way, true fried shrimp lovers have to try it.
