These kid-friendly eateries make dining fun — for parents, too!
Now that summer is upon us, you may be looking for restaurants that will feed your brood as well as entertain them. This week’s column is dedicated to worn-out stay-at-home parents as well as the ones who return from work to stir-crazy kids.
Satterfield’s
This lunch-only establishment in downtown Macon is the perfect place to play “I Spy,” with pig paraphernalia covering every inch of its low-ceiling, wooden interior. Receive a bowl of boiled peanuts to munch on while you wait a mere 10 minutes for your order. Kid picks: piglet sandwiches, turkey “goblets,” ham “hamlets,” grilled cheese, green beans, drugstore dog, homemade fries, pink lemonade and banana pudding.
Fincher’s Drive-In
One of four locations, the Fincher’s on Houston Avenue is a trip back in time. Whether you park in the car window service area or go inside the squeaky screen door, you’ll be greeted like it’s 1959. Some of their prices haven’t changed since then either, like the Plain Meat Pig sauceless sandwich for $2.70 and the hand-pattied burger for $2.80. You can even get an American history lesson looking at the pictures on the walls.
Piedmont Brewery and Kitchen
This choice is a little pricier, but the respite you get from the downstairs arcade is worth it. While you enjoy a platter of smoked meats upstairs, the little ones can play foosball, bocce ball and retro video games downstairs. Kids menu items include corn dogs, mac and cheese, grilled cheese and chicken fingers, each for $5 with a side. For dessert, there’s a nutter butter pie, a root beer float or (my fave) a peach hand pie.
Nu-Way Weiners
Even if their fire engine red hot dogs are not your favorite, every child in Middle Georgia should visit this local institution at least once. This piece of history won’t cost you much, with an “all the way” dog for only $1.99, a plain hamburger for $1.89, and a grilled cheese for $2.29. Breakfast starts at 6:30 a.m., with options like sausage biscuits, egg platters, and ham and grits. Finish it all off with a triple-thick chocolate malt. There are several Nu-Way locations to choose from, scattered across Middle Georgia.
Dickey Farms
It may not be a restaurant, but no summer is complete without a peachy snack from Dickey Farms in Musella. The oldest, continuously operating peach packing house in Georgia has kept the experience how it’s always been. You and the kids can watch peaches get sorted, washed, selected and boxed, then get a cone of delicious homemade peach ice cream or a fried hand pie. Insider tip: Go downstairs to get a bushel box of overripe/damaged peaches for only $9.50.
