Women with a Purpose: A Homegrown Showcase for Female Talent
Friday at Fresh Produce Records
The goal of this locals-only showcase is “to provide a safe, positive place for these (female) artists to come together and share their gift and stories.” The lineup is a great mix of Macon favorites — Louise Warren, oh dorian, Amber Marie Pierce — and women who are new to presenting their music in an intimate concert setting. There’s even a new band, Atria, making their debut. Best of all, the organizers have unselfishly decided to donate proceeds from the event to the Safe House of Macon, an organization that provides resources to victims of violence. Win-win. 6 p.m. $5.
Good Night Alive, the Band Piano and the Bearcats
Friday at the Hummingbird Stage and Taproom
Macon favorites Good Night Alive return to the stage for a special First Friday event at the Hummingbird Stage and Taproom. They say they started out as an indie electronic rock band, but now they just plain rawk. There’s some real emotional guitar fury going on there. They look angry when they play, but I promise they’re real sweet guys, and they won’t sweat on you too much if you wanna get close to the stage. It’s all part of the live music experience. They’ll be joined by the Band Piano and the Bearcats, who are led by a self-professed PhD of seduction. I’d watch my drink during that one. 10:30 p.m. $5.
The 5th Dimension
Sunday at the Grand Opera House
The moon is in the summer sky. Jupiter has aligned with Mars. Peace guides the planet. Love steers the stars. Well, that’s a stretch on the last two given the current political climate. But one can dream, right? The 5th Dimension sure was dreaming when they catapulted to national prominence following hits like “Up, Up and Away” and “Age of Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In” during 1967’s summer of love. Travel back in time to a more peaceful and idealistic time with the band as they present all their favorites featuring their tight vocal harmonies. 7:30 p.m. $47-$55.
Cinema Soloriens with Newton Collier and Don Cam
Wednesday at Fresh Produce Records
Cinema Soloriens is an ever-evolving collaboration between musician and filmmaker James Harrar and Marshall Allen, who keeps a day job as the leader of the Sun Ra Arkestra. The pair sees the group not as a band, but as a “creative and spiritual learning center” that combines imagery and spoken word with improvisational musical exploration. They’ll be joined by Macon’s own living legend, Newton Collier, who famously played trumpet with Sam & Dave, among others. Dom Cam, a new experimental minimalist project out of Atlanta, fills the bill. 9 p.m. $5.
Macon Dreams Bottle Release Party
Wednesday at Macon Beer Company
In preparation for the celebration of what would have been Otis Redding’s 75th birthday weekend, the Macon Beer Company has been working with the Otis Redding Foundation to prepare a special beer that honors the late singer. Did Otis Redding like beer? Who knows? Who really cares? In the words of Tom T. Hall, “I like beer; it makes me a jolly good fellow.” I also like live music, and it’s a scientific fact that beer and live music pair perfectly. There will be plenty of the latter at this event, as well as food and a special presentation to the Redding family. 6 p.m. $30.
