Music at the Mount: Brent Cobb with Good Country People
Friday at Mount de Sales Academy
Ellaville native Brent Cobb has been a busy fella since leaving the Peach State to pursue a career in music. His initial success came with his songwriting, with his songs being performed and recorded by the likes of Luke Bryan and Little Big Town. As a performer, he’s been cutting a path that is more in line with his cousin, producer Dave Cobb, and the artists that he works with. In short, Brent Cobb is a rising star in country and people (including NPR and CMT) are taking notice. If you dig great songs with actual substance, you’re gonna want to check this guy out. 7 p.m. $15-$20.
Listening Woman with Konda
Saturday at Fresh Produce Records
Hailing from Boston, Listening Woman is led by Katie McShane, a fearless creator of music that has been described as “jazz-punk-funk,” a blend that is as interesting as it it jarring. Atlanta group Konda fills out the bill with their guitar/drum duo that melds groove-heavy jazz and samples for what will indeed be a night of gloriously experimental music. 9 p.m. $5.
Tony Joe White with Clarence Bucaro
Sunday at the Cox Capitol Theatre
Tony Joe White’s resume includes writing credits on monster hits like “Rainy Night in Georgia” and “Polk Salad Annie,” and his songs have been covered by the likes of Tina Turner, Elvis Presley and Dusty Springfield. He certainly didn’t stop with those early successes, though. He continues to write and record, claiming that the songwriting process keeps him going. His latest record, “Hoodoo,” was written among the sounds of coyotes, birds and wolves at his ranch outside of Nashville, a perfect setting for song ideas to float in. Clarence Bucaro, a songwriter who draws comparisons to Jackson Browne and Van Morrison, opens the show. Doors: 7 p.m./Show: 8 p.m. $25.
R. Ariel with Agyn and Group Chat
Wednesday at Fresh Produce
Records
R. Ariel was picked by Brian Eno and Thris Tian as “Best New Artist of the Year” for Noise Festival UK in 2014. In the world of electronic and music, the blessing of Brian Eno a pretty big deal — seeing as he single handedly invented the genre. R. Ariel stacks her ethereal voice on top of gently rolling synths and downtempo beats. She’ll be joined by Agyn and Group Chat, two groups that share her sonic sensibilities. 9 p.m.
