From penmanship to produce, Design, Wine and Dine expands in third year
The Historic Macon Foundation’s third Design, Wine and Dine Festival has expanded to a “seven day sensory celebration” this year.
“Last year, we did two days of sessions one after the other; this year we are doing one per day in the evening so lots of different people can come,” said Emily Hopkins, Historic Macon’s special events and marketing coordinator. “We were hoping to do more hands-on events like cooking with Norman King and calligraphy with Ginna Dunlap, for example.”
“Calligraphy and Crumpets with Ginna Dunlap” will take place Sunday, featuring “a class that will demonstrate the basics of modern calligraphy,” according to the Design, Wine and Dine Festival website.
“There’s been a renaissance and rebirth of stationary and calligraphy, and we wanted to tap into that trend,” Hopkins said.
King, a former Southern Living food editor and author of “The Way to Fry,” will present “What to do with Summer Produce” on Wednesday, demonstrating ways to use fresh produce in everyday cooking.
On Saturday, East Coast Editor of Better Homes and Gardens Eddie Ross will be presenting “Modern Mix,” a lecture based on his book of the same name.
“We are really excited to have Eddie Ross come to town,” Hopkins said. “He got his start with Martha Stewart, and ‘Modern Mix’ is his approach to design, using what you have and things you can buy at a flea market or thrift shop and mixing those with things you might buy in a department store.”
Following Ross on Saturday, Macon native Alex Smith will present “Innovation and Preservation in the Southern Landscape.” A landscape and garden designer, Smith is a founding member of the Southeastern Horticultural Society and his work has been featured in magazines such as Veranda and Southern Living, Hopkins said.
And after a whiskey tasting event was one of last year’s most popular events, the festival has included “Bourbon Tasting” on Monday.
“Richie Jones is very knowledgeable about bourbon and is a huge supporter of Historic Macon,” Hopkins said. “And with the setting being the Design House, it’s another way to get people excited to come out.”
