Gig Guide
Buckethead
FRIDAY AT THE COX CAPITOL THEATRE
A man, a hopeless recidivist and guitarist, is returning from a quick run to KFC for a bucket of the Colonel’s best: white meat, dark meat, breasts and thighs for the wife and newly-stolen son, Junior. On the way home, he stops into a convenience store for much-needed diapers. Diapers. That’s all it is these days. No time for music. As he approaches the counter, absentmindedly dipping into the bucket and gnawing a drumstick, the urge hits him: “Why pay for these diapers when they can just as easily be stolen?” In a split second that plays out in slow motion, the chicken falls, bounces off the fluorescent-lit white tile as the bucket is upturned and slipped on his head as a disguise. The deed done, he splits and holds up the first truck he sees for the getaway. The driver, doubletaking and perplexed, exclaims, “son, you’ve got a bucket on your head.” The man, jaw set, youthful vigilance restored, deadpans, “drive fast, I gotta shake these cops and get to the gig in Macon.” Doors: 7 p.m./Show: 8 p.m. $25-$30.
Good Night Alive, Mighty and Chrome Pony
SATURDAY AT THE HUMMINGBIRD STAGE AND TAPROOM
Having somehow skirted any legal trouble or serious injury (well, physical, at least), the Hummingbird 5X is back for a second year. It’s an event that combines drinking booze with competitive running, two activities that are apparently not mutually exclusive. If you’re still alive and kicking after the festival, which also includes face painting, a dunking booth and sugary, icy adult beverages, there’s a great lineup of music that starts early and goes late into the night, including Good Night Alive, Mighty and Chrome Pony. 5 p.m.
Colby Dee, Maggie Renfroe, Lauren Ashley and Megan Fowler
SATURDAY AT THE COX CAPITOL THEATRE
Historically, Georgia has produced an astounding number of successful musicians, and that trend has by no means died out. These days, the state is a center of talent for country music, and many of those artists hailing from the state happen to be female. The Cox Capitol Theatre is showcasing a few of them for this special “Georgia Peaches Night,” headlined by Middle Georgia’s own Colby Dee. The lineup also includes Maggie Renfroe, Lauren Ashley and Megan Fowler. Doors: 6 p.m./Show: 7 p.m. $10.
Chelsea Hughes
THURSDAY AT MAIN STREET PIZZA
Main Street Pizza continues to showcase local musicians for free on Thursday nights, and this one marks the return of piano songstress Chelsea Hughes. Chelsea has only recently started performing in Macon again, but she is no stranger to these parts (she’s been performing in Macon since around 2010). Her Sonicbids page cites influences as wide-ranging as Franz Lizst to Paramore, but you really need to see it in person to fully experience it. 7 p.m. Free.
Jimmy Haney
THURSDAY AT LANFORD LIBRARY
Sometimes, it seems as though Macon’s music history never ends. Case in point: Jimmy Haney, a guitarist with Patsy Cline up until the time of her death, has called Macon home for decades. Haney will be on hand at the Charles A. Lanford Library to talk about his career in music and what life after that has been like for him. If you have any interest in country music history, you will not want to miss this free event. There’s even talk of him playing a little bit. 5:30 p.m. Free.
