Gig Guide
Dirty Doves with Pony League
SATURDAY AT THE HUMMINGBIRD STAGE AND TAPROOM
The Dirty Doves make no bones about the fact that they love music from a different time — a time when rock bands rooted in the blues were something to be proud of. But don’t get it wrong, these guys are far from a nostalgia act. If you like bluesy funky goodness performed with the tightness of a band that’s seasoned well beyond their years, this is that band. Atlanta’s Pony League open with a sound that Latest Disgrace describes as “open air, top down, road trip music that glistens loud and proud with contagious energy and blue sky warmth.” 10:30 p.m. $5.
Jason Isbell with Tommy Emmanuel
WEDNESDAY AT THE CITY
AUDITORIUM
Riding high on the success of his last two releases, “Southeastern” and “Something More Than Free,” Isbell should not be an unfamiliar name to Americana and country music fans. Though this tour sadly won’t include its original headliner, Merle Haggard, it will certainly prove to be one of the best of the year thus far. The bill is filled out by guitar extraordinaire Tommy Emmanuel, who will be a long way from his home country of Australia. 7 p.m. $25-$35.
Floco Torres with Kid Dead and Friends
THURSDAY AT FRESH PRODUCE RECORDS
Floco Torres is at it again. By “it,” we mean that he’s releasing even more music (“Porsche” EP) and gearing up for a string of shows this summer. If you’ve never seen Floco perform, you quite simply need to fix that. Floco will be joined by Tallahassee-born and current Nashville resident Kid Dead, who puts on an equally impressive show that should not be missed. The bill also includes Profound (Atlanta), BlackNerdNinja (Athens) and Undiscover (Tallahasee) for what will undoubtedly be a killer night of hip-hop at Fresh Produce Records. 9 p.m. $5.
Thursdalusia
THURSDAY AT ANDALUSIA FARM IN MILLEDGEVILLE
If an open mic night on a front porch sounds like a pretty awesome way to spend a Thursday night, then an open mic night on the front porch of the former home of one of the greatest Southern writers should sound like a pretty idyllic time. Andalusia, Flannery O’Connor’s final home in Milledgeville, will be hosting just such an event every third Thursday through September. The rules are pretty simple: “Bring your creative game — music, reading, dancing and storytelling. Everyone gets five minutes of fame on the Nail House deck.” 5 p.m. Free.
“Miles Ahead”
THURSDAY AT THE DOUGLASS THEATRE
Don Cheadle as Miles Davis in a movie that’s playing at the Douglass Theatre should be the only explanation that you need to make this happen. “Miles Ahead” is the highly anticipated film that explores the life and music of the jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger and cultural icon. 7:30 p.m. (additional showings on May 20-21) $6 admission includes popcorn and a drink.
