Weekend of jazz and more
Here’s a lineup of music and more in Macon this weekend. Good luck on making the rounds!
On the heels of a successful evening entertaining an audience from Fort Valley State University and its new president at a recent Live at the Tubman event, the Ken Trimmins Quartet will appear in concert Friday night for the community arts organization, Allied Arts, at Allen’s Market in Milledgeville.
Look for the group to perform again next month, when they appear as the featured artists May 29 to open the summer Jazz in the Courtyard series at the Douglass Theatre. Contact Milledgeville Allied Arts at 478-452-3950 for more information about the concert.
The Jazz Ensemble at Mercer University’s Townsend School of Music performs its free “Begin the Beguine” concert Friday night at Neva Langley Fickling Hall. They will appear again at the same venue to present a “Jazz Combo” on Tuesday. The Jazz Ensemble can be reached at 478-301-5751.
Macon Pops Jazz Orchestra presents music through the decades that defines Las Vegas. This concert, dubbed “Vintage Vegas!” is happening Friday night. The annual fundraising concert will feature guest vocalist Michelle Amato of Orlando, Florida. The performance will be at the Cox Capitol Theatre. Call 478-257-6391 for ticket information.
Not exactly jazz
If you’ve driven by the Macon Coliseum lately, surely you’ve seen the digital sign that announces the concert featuring the all-female Irish musical ensemble, Celtic Woman. The group makes this stop in Macon during its Destiny tour and performs material from their CD and DVD of the same name. Tickets for Friday night’s concert at the City Auditorium can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.
“Mamma Mia!,” the hit stage musical based on the songs of Swedish pop group, ABBA, returns to the Grand Opera House for two performances Saturday. Call the box office at 478-301-5470 for tickets and information about the venue’s schedule of upcoming performances.
A major milestone
Here’s a shout-out to the Museum of Arts and Sciences, which hosts its annual Pet Show on Sunday. This is the 60th occurrence of the iconic fundraiser and it remains the institution’s longest-running animal event. Gather the children and family pets and head over to the lawn at Coliseum Northside Hospital to enjoy fun games, yummy foods, a judged pet competition and animal-related activities. Call the museum at 478-477-3232 to find out more about the Pet Show.
