Gig Guide
FRIDAY AT FRESH PRODUCE RECORDS
Pylon is without a doubt one of the most important and influential bands to come out of Athens in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The group's jangly post-punk helped to define the sound of the city, and they were revered enough within that scene for Bill Berry, drummer for R.E.M., to claim that they were the best rock 'n' roll band in America. The original Pylon ceased to exist when guitarist Randy Bewley passed away in 2009, but singer Vanessa Hay has recently revived the group, enlisting an all-star lineup of Athens musicians to pay tribute to the group, including members of the Glands, Casper and the Cookies, and Big Atomic. 9 p.m. Free.
Riff Raff with Fresh Valley Kings
FRIDAY AT THE COX CAPITOL THEATRE
Like many folks these days, Riff Raff owes his fame to reality TV. The Houston rapper appeared on MTV's "From G's to Gents," a show in which "hardcore ballers tried to become sophisticates." Judging from Riff Raff's aesthetic, the training didn't take, but the rapper's notoriety rose due to stunts that could alternately be viewed as accidentally brilliant and mind-numbingly moronic, like getting BET and MTV tattoos on his neck and including his personal phone number in his song lyrics. Either way, he's gone on to collaborate with artists like Soulja Boy, Andy Milonakis, O.G. Ron C. and Diplo. This one is bound to get weird. Doors: 7 p.m./Show: 8 p.m. $22-$25.
Megan Jean and the KFB
FRIDAY AT ROASTED CAFE & LOUNGE
Megan Jean and the KFB (Klay Family Band) play what they describe as a "demented blend of Americana, punk, dance and the avant-garde," or in simpler terms, they're "a metal band, if it was 1927." The band is a married duo, based in Charleston, South Carolina, but living on the road most of the year in what they call their Never-Ending Tour. As such, they put on a impressive banjo, guitar and washboard-based live show that's equal parts communal seance and backwoods hoedown. 9 p.m.
Dave Rawlings Machine
SUNDAY AT THE COX CAPITOL THEATRE
Dave Rawlings is a well-rounded man. He's served as producer for artists such as Gillian Welch and the Old Crow Medicine Show, contributed his signature style to a diverse array of records such as Bright Eyes' "Cassadaga," Robyn Hitcock's "Spooked" and Ryan Adam's "Heartbreaker" (see "Argument with Dave Rawlings Concerning Morrissey"). He also finds time to front his own band, the Dave Rawlings Machine, which highlights his musical partnership with Gillian Welch. What started as an almost haphazard excuse for musicians has now turned into a serious endeavor, with the band releasing its second record, "Nashiville Obsolete," at the end of last year. Doors: 7 p.m./Show: 8 p.m. $32-$35.
