Head to the Taco Shed in Warner Robins before you have to fight the crowd
Go now. Don't even finish reading this review. By the time everyone finds out about this place, just south of Robins Air Force Base on Ga. 247, you won't be able to get in -- so go now.
One of our reviewers said it reminded her of a little place in San Antonio that knocked her socks off. Another one said he was coming back every day until he got tired of it. I thought, what on Earth is this awesome place doing all the way out here? The answer: Because folks will come.
Walk to the right when you enter and place your order at the counter. Each menu board features a different meat -- chicken, steak, pork, seafood or veggie. Every item is named for something in Houston County, from the Demon steak fajita tacos to the Green Street fried green tomato tacos.
They have a few salads and nachos, but the tacos are by far the best part of the experience. We tried the cilantro lime and mango chicken McConnell tacos with guajillo crema and flashed back to a vacation in the islands. The Davis Drive chicken tacos with chipotle aioli was simpler but just as tasty. All of the chicken tacos, including the Northside with jalapeño garlic sauce, the Veterans with black beans and corn, and the International City with pickled red onion, are only $3.55 each.
The pork ones are also just $3.55 each. We enjoyed the Russell with roasted pork, shredded cabbage, queso fresco and tomatillo salsa but I would come back for the Robins, with pork and pineapple, or the Hoco chorizo and potatoes, too. Another favorite was the I-75 smoked BBQ brisket with cilantro coleslaw, jalapeño pickle and chipotle barbecue sauce for $4.75. All other beef tacos are $3.95, like the Watson Philly cheese steak and the southwestern Carl Vinson.
Each of the seafood tacos are just $4.25, from our favorite fried shrimp Shipwreck to the 96, a grilled ahi tuna taco with sesame seeds and Asian barbecue sauce. There's also a blackened mahi-mahi with cinnamon agave crema and a fried version called the Houston Lake. The two veggie tacos, including the veggie-loaded Wellston, are just $3.55 each.
We were too full to try the salads: a fajita style one with your choice of meat or a coastal style with mango salsa, each for $7.55. The nachos were a bit disappointing as the most expensive item on the menu at $8.50.
They're open for breakfast and lunch only currently, but plans are underway to add a beer license and evening hours. Come try it before the world finds out!
