Southern staples taste homemade at Milo and Ronda's Homestyle Cookin'
Milo and Ronda's Homestyle Cookin' is a cute little cafe tucked into the corner of a plaza on Arkwright Road. When we came, it was very quiet, with several customers stopping by to take meals home -- probably regular customers who just stop by to grab dinner on the way home.
Unlike most meat-and-two places, Milo and Ronda's gives you real plates and glassware, giving it a real feeling of being in someone's home. Similar to most meat-and-twos, every day brings a different menu.
Monday features beef tips, smothered pork chops or fried chicken with two sides for $9.75 or ox tails with two sides for $11.50. Sides include squash casserole, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, rice and gravy, and red mashed potatoes.
Everything we tried was delicious but I wasn't completely sold on the macaroni and cheese with jalapeño in it. I appreciated their ability to successfully riff on the classic, but the classic is a classic for a reason.
Tuesday offers a similar menu but with meatloaf instead of pork chops. Since we came on a Tuesday, I ordered the meatloaf and enjoyed every bite of the huge serving. They put a sweet and savory sauce on top that perfectly compliments this juicy dish. We also had their tender fried chicken, beef tips and a vegetable plate. On Tuesday they serve fabulous black eyed peas instead of Monday's squash casserole.
If you come on Wednesday, you can choose between the daily fried chicken and beef tips or the Wednesday-only pigs feet. The featured side is green beans and potatoes along with the daily offerings.
Each Thursday is called "Thanksgiving Thursday" because they serve baked turkey wings, dressing, lima beans and turnip greens. You can still order the daily fried chicken and usual sides, too.
Friday is their most special weekday, called "Fish, Pig and Soul Day" because they have pulled pork barbecue (enough to make two sandwiches) and several combinations of fish and shrimp. There's a three-piece fish plate for $9.25; a two-piece fish plate with eight fried shrimp for $10.50; 12 butterflied fried shrimp for $9.75; or a fish sandwich with lettuce and cheese for only $5.50.
On Sunday they offer seven different entrees and 10 sides, including dressing, potato salad, candied yams, fried corn, black eyed peas and squash casserole. The entrees include baked turkey wings, baked chicken, meatloaf, fried chicken and lasagna, ranging in price from $9.75 to $11.50.
Kids meals are available, and senior citizen discounts and military discounts are, too. The food is hard to beat -- all offered at reasonable prices -- and you can't beat the personal service.
