Gig Guide
FRIDAY AT THE LIBRARY BALLROOM
Webb Wilder has been described as the "last of the full-grown men, and the last of the boarding house people ... a unique presence among the peasants ... a force for good, and a friend to animals." He's been making music in one way or another for more than three decades, but don't call him a mature artist. He's an anglophile from southern Mississippi, equal parts Kinks and King Curtis. In his own words, he makes "rock for roots fans and roots for rock fans." 8 p.m. $10 pre-sale. $15 at the door.
Natural Child with Faux Ferocious and Analog Existence
FRIDAY AT THE HUMMINGBIRD STAGE AND TAPROOM
Natural Child just wanna have a good time. Kick back, have a smoke, make a little love, ya know? They bring that attitude to their music, which is a little bit country funky, a little soulful and certainly very rock 'n' roll in a Jerry Lee Lewis getting married to his underage sister sort of way. They keep it simple, which is to say they keep it real. Check the worries at the door and let your hips slip for this one. They'll be joined by fuzzy garage rawkers Faux Ferocious as well as Macon's own Analog Existence, so be sure to get there early to support the local boys. 10:30 p.m. $5.
St. Paul and the Broken Bones with Banditos
SATURDAY AT THE COX CAPITOL THEATRE
Like many a famous soul singer, Paul Janeway (aka St. Paul), started his singing career in the church. He was raised in rural Alabama in a household where pentecostal gospel music was the norm, no secular music allowed. To say that upbringing shows in his performances with the Broken Bones is a massive understatement. But, as is often the case, his tastes eventually drifted into the secular world, where he absorbed songs by artists such as Otis Redding, James Carr and O.V. Wright, which helped to solidify his vocal style. They'll be joined by fellow Alabamian rock 'n' rollers, Banditos. 8 p.m. $25.
Rhythm and Rye: Deep House
SATURDAY AT THE BOURBON BAR
Shawty Slim is best known around these parts as B.O.B.'s touring DJ, but he's also got a few tricks up his sleeve as far as writing his own material is concerned. At this special performance, he'll be celebrating the release of his new EP, "One a Days," as well as curating a house music set, which is guaranteed to pair well with your favorite whiskey. 10 pm. Free.
The Independents with Taped Fist and Above Repute
MONDAY AT THE BACK PORCH LOUNGE
These days, everything has to have a name, I suppose. For the Independents, that name is "horror ska." They've been at it since 1992, hailing from Florence, South Carolina, and taking their show on the road with the likes of Flogging Molly, the Bouncing Souls, the Misfits and Blink 182. For their stop in Macon, they'll be gracing the stage at the town's favorite dive bar, the Back Porch Lounge, and joined by locals Taped Fist and Above Repute. It'll be just like Halloween in January. Spooky. 9 p.m. Free (donations suggested).
