Byas: Christmas productions on stage this weekend

If you're still trying to get into the holiday spirit, there is nothing better than experiencing one of these live performances. Surely, this will help you get excited about the season.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

MIDDLE GEORGIA

"A Christmas Cabaret": Back for its fourth consecutive year, "A Christmas Cabaret" is a production of Theatre Macon entertainers as they perform sacred and secular Christmas favorites. The show features a live band and some of the best singers in the region. Performances are 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Call 478-746-9485 for information.

" 'Twas The Night Before Christmas": The Macon Little Theatre kids series presents " 'Twas The Night Before Christmas," a family-friendly production featuring a cast of young actors. The story is about a first-year teacher who finds that he must direct a cast of students from school detention. Catch the play at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Call 478-471-PLAY for information.

"A Christmas Carol": It just wouldn't be Christmas if "A Christmas Carol: The Musical" wasn't on the list. This classic Charles Dickens story -- a miserly old man transforms into a kinder, gentler human being after visitations from three ghosts from his past -- is brought to us by the same team behind "The Addams Family," which I wrote about this summer. Performances at the Perry Players Community Theatre are at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Call 478-987-5354 for information.

"Celebration Of Gospel": A free concert of Christian and holiday favorites, "Celebration of Gospel" will be performed by many artists from around the region who gather for this annual musical event. The soulful performance takes place at 6 p.m. Saturday at Theatre Dublin. Call 478-277-5074 for information.

FURTHER AFIELD

"Christmas Belles": A church Christmas program spins hilariously out of control in "Christmas Belles," a Southern farce. This Jones Hope Wooten comedy features squabbling sisters, family secrets, a surly Santa, a vengeful sheep and a reluctant Elvis impersonator. The Henry Players perform at the Hood Street Art Center in McDonough at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Call 678-591-7744 for information.

"The Nutcracker": This weekend offers what is most likely your last chance to see another tradition of the season, "The Nutcracker." This tale of holiday adventure follows a little girl's journey through a fantasy world of fairies, princes, toy soldiers and an army of mice. The Classic Center Theatre in Athens stages this holiday classic at 3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Call 800-918-6393 for information.

"A Tuna Christmas": A holiday favorite since 2001, "A Tuna Christmas" is about a Christmas phantom and a woman who plans on winning an annual yard display contest for the 15th year in a row. See this regional classic at the Springer Theatre in Columbus at 7:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Parental guidance is suggested. Call 706-327-3688 for information.
