Some places transcend their actual purpose. The feel of a place, its history -- those are the things that make you want to come back again and again. That formula seems to be working for Sid's Sandwich Shop on Forsyth Street.

Don't get me wrong, they make a great sandwich. But eating their awesome egg salad sandwich in a 70-year-old booth next to the wood-burning fireplace is miles better than taking it away. It comes folded in waxed paper, like moms used to do before Ziplock bags.

The prices seem reasonable. You could easily buy whatever single item you wanted for less than $5 or spend a few extra dollars for something larger. A large drink is only $1.89 and a coffee is 80 cents.

We tried all their homemade fillings on their own (so we wouldn't get too full to try everything). The pimento cheese, chicken salad and egg salad were all great quality and not too heavy on mayonnaise or any particular seasoning. We had the double-decker club on white, smoked turkey on sourdough, and pastrami on rye, of course.

While you shouldn't expect anything huge or unusual, these sandwiches are as close as we get to a deli in these parts.

Some people mention that the condiments can be heavy-handed, so if you're particular, be specific. They're making the sandwiches about a yard from your face, so speak up if the glob of mustard is going to ruin your day.

The soups are quality as well. Now is the time to order the potato soup with a single ham sandwich or to crumble crackers into their homemade chili. We didn't try their salads, but I know people who work nearby that swear by their taco salad, chef salad and chicken salad plate.

We got their last brownie -- which was just a tiny but dense little thing -- and we're told you have to get there early to get those. They also claim to have the best sweet tea in town.

Items we didn't try include the reuben, the bologna sandwich, and the roast or corned beef, but I'm betting they are as good or better than you can make at home. In fact, I'd venture to say that Sid's is kind of a home when you have to be away from home.

You'll usually see people you like there and you can sit in a high booth if you want to be alone.

If you're not sure where it is, look for the sign on Forsyth Street with the silly sayings on it. It's only open weekdays for lunch, so call a friend who works nearby and enjoy your lunch together.
