If her customers could vote to change one thing about Liz's Southern Cooking in Warner Robins, it would be to make her hours longer.

We came about an hour before closing and snatched up most of the remaining desserts, all of the peach cobbler, and the rest of the meatloaf.

About five minutes before they locked the door, a large group of hungry men entered and asked if they could have dinner. Liz said, "Of course!" and magically produced plenty of food to make them happy.

It's a simple set up: walk to the front, choose your meat and two sides from the steam table, and they box it up. The dining area is very clean and comfortable, so you can sit down with your meal or take it home.

We came on a Tuesday and had a choice of meat loaf, fried chicken or smothered pork chops. We tried all of them: the smothered pork chops were juicy and thick, the chicken was moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside, but that meat loaf was beyond wonderful. You receive two huge slabs of it, coated with a thick, sweet tomato sauce.

Our sides Tuesday were limited to green beans, cabbage, rice with gravy and boiled potatoes, but earlier they also offered mashed potatoes and squash casserole. Every side we had was quality, but nothing unusual.

Monday features beef tips, fried and baked chicken, and neck bones, with either collard greens, lima beans, macaroni and cheese, or rice; Wednesday has fried chicken, baked turkey wings, pig feet, and either Salisbury steak or liver and onions, with sides like creamed corn, fresh turnips, field peas and okra, or dressing.

If you come on a Thursday, you can have baked or fried chicken, or barbecue ribs (which cost a dollar extra), plus fresh rutabagas, collard greens, mac and cheese or baked beans.

On Friday, you can get fried pork chops, baked chicken, fried catfish or tilapia (a dollar extra), with green beans, fresh kernel corn, yellow rice, potato logs, butter beans, coleslaw or hush puppies.

Our desserts were all homemade and only $1.99 each. The chess pie was small but delicious, the chocolate cake with chocolate icing was super moist, and the key lime cake is always a hit, but the peach cobbler was our favorite. If you run out of room, you should take a few home for later.

If you want to avoid the lunch time crowds, come for an early weekday dinner or, even better, come on a Sunday afternoon. It's the food we all used to have after church -- made and served with love.
