Fennelly: Cooler weather not the only sign that fall is here
If the cooler weather is not sufficient to convince us that autumn is at last here, in my mailbox a few days ago was news from the Friends of the Library. The "Bookworm" newsletter reminds us that preparations are already underway for the 2016 Old Book Sale and our help is needed.
Our role is to donate books, keep our dues current and sign-up to volunteer for the annual sale (March 3-6). The group, an all-volunteer organization, raises major money for our library system and offers assistance to any organization in the community that needs books.
As the "Bookworm" reminds us, a strong library system is a cornerstone of a strong community. We face few problems that literacy will not mend. Book donations can be dropped off at any branch library, and if you're not a member, be sure to grab an application.
COOL WEEKEND
Halloween weekend is always a special time for kids, but there's some particularly suitable entertainment on the calendar this weekend and in the next few days. Theatre Macon's Youth Actors Company is presenting the musical "Annie Jr." tonight through Nov. 7, while at the Grand Opera House on Thursday is a play for young audiences. "Miss Nelson Is Missing" will be presented for two performances.
Another Mercer University sponsored event -- this one definitely for adults -- is Steven Dietz's "Fiction," opening Nov. 12 at the Tattnall Square Center for the Arts. Dietz and his wife have had works presented by at least three local theaters.
But we don't need to wait until mid-November for an opening. Beginning next Friday, director Carol Strandberg and the Perry Players are doing "Sing Hallelujah," a gospel musical loaded with old-time favorites.
BEATLES COMING
Speaking of old favorites, also next weekend, the Macon Pops Orchestra will bring "Top to Bottom: Sgt. Pepper & Abby Road" to the City Auditorium.
EARLY SHOPPING
If you saw the Theatre Macon production of "Calendar Girls," you know that many of the women who have been involved with local theater are as good as their word: There was indeed a handsome calendar produced for that show, and ones unsold will make great gifts for theater lovers and also serve as a daily reminder that the beauty in community theater goes far more than skin deep.
