Calzones + music = perfect night at Main Street Pizza
Main Street Pizza is a great place to just hang out. We came on a Thursday evening and listened to excellent live music (by recent Macon Pops collaborator Louise Warren) on a beautiful October evening in their back patio.
Let's start with that patio. Not only does this little area behind their building double the size of their table service area, but it's so picturesque, with a vantage point of the quaint alley where Ninja Sushi and Tokyo Alley face each other -- so very European to watch people passing by while you enjoy music and food.
They host different musical artists every Thursday, so it's a great place to hear what Macon has to offer on the music scene, too. We didn't pay anything extra to hear original music, enjoyed by a crowd that included ages 10 to 60.
Finally, the food. Hands down, the calzone was our best choice. The crust was thin on everything, but on the calzone it was perfection.
Our large one came with unlimited -- let me say that again -- unlimited toppings for $15.95. We didn't want to get greedy, so we chose banana peppers, Italian sausage, bacon, pepperoni, ricotta and ham. It was pre-sliced into four sections and looked like a Chicago-style stuffed pizza when we pulled it apart. Other fillings include green peppers, jalapeños, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, black olives, pineapple, Parmesan, garlic and feta -- so you could really go crazy with this.
Our regular pizzas were OK, but didn't shine like the calzone. Granted, we were rather boring with these and got a cheese one and a grilled chicken "white pizza" one. I know ricotta isn't mandatory on white pizza, but this one needed a little more than mozzarella, oregano and chicken to make it sing.
We added a small salad and some chicken wings to healthy it up a little. The BBQ wings seem to be using local Mrs. Griffin's sauce; they're more tangy than sweet. You get six for $3.95, 12 for $6.95, or 48 for $21.95 -- so they're great for a snack, too. Our side salad was nothing special, but it was only $2.29.
Slices at lunch are $2.29, as are the bread sticks any time. They deliver downtown, offer catering and have Facebook deals, as well.
My advice: Come sit on the patio on a Thursday night and try a calzone stuffed with everything you love on a pizza.
It will be the best evening you can possibly have for less than $16.
