BOX SEAT: Four fantastic choices to keep you busy this weekend
Vacations are over for most of us, so now it's back to business as usual. There's an uptick in the number of things to do in Middle Georgia, and that trend will only increase as we approach the holidays -- so no reason to be idle these days!
Since my space is limited, I'm sharing only a few events that are planned for this weekend.
MOVIE UNDER THE STARS
Families looking for a lighter offering should head over to the Ocmulgee National Monument tonight for their Movie in the Park. Tonight's screening is reminiscent of Halloween: "Hotel Transylvania," a fantasy comedy about Count Dracula, who builds and operates a resort so that some famous monsters can take a break from humans.
This animated film features the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, David Spade and CeeLo Green. Take some chairs or blankets with you and enjoy the movie under the stars. This free event starts at 6:30 p.m.
AN EVENING OF ELEGANCE
Composer Ken Ford, "King of Strings," returns to Macon tonight. This master of the electric violin is sure to delight his audience with a gospel and jazz set at Wesleyan College. Also performing on the Porter Auditorium stage are Katina Cabiness, Harold E. Thomas and the Union Baptist Church Praise Team. The concert begins at 7 p.m.
A SPECTACULAR SPOOKTACLE
Aficionados of the classics should be interested in being a part of the Macon Symphony Orchestra's nod to All Hallows' Eve. Pianist and conductor Jerry Steichen will guide the orchestra in a mixture of classical and popular music Saturday night. MSO invites you and your families to put on your favorite Halloween costumes and come to the Grand Opera House for the celebration. The evening's program is posted on MSO's website (www.maconsympho ny.com), so check it out, then head downtown for the performance, "Symphonic Tricks & Orchestral Treats," which begins at 7:30 p.m.
IT'S ALL FOR MACON
In contrast to the evening events listed above, here's something that occurs during daylight! Wesleyan's Lane Center for Service and Leadership, which encourages community service in Middle Georgia, has organized an effort that they call, Wow! A Day for Macon. They are inviting volunteers to join them Saturday morning in this communitywide effort of various projects throughout the city. All interested parties should report to the Anderson Dining Hall at 8 a.m.
