Get fried fish with no frills attached at Fish and More in Macon
Fish and More is one of those dive restaurants that focuses totally on the food and doesn't bother with decor. It's a counter-top operation with pick up only but you can also buy fresh fish that's cleaned and ready for your cooking skills.
I was feeding a large group, so I chose the Family Fish Special, which includes a larger order of fries, tartar sauce and two smallish containers of what seemed like homemade cole slaw.
We got the 10-piece whiting with six hush puppies for $26.99, but tilapia is available for $3 more or catfish for an extra $5. They also have 15- and 20-piece sizes for another $10 and $20 more, respectively.
The fried whiting was very good, with a cornmeal batter that wasn't too thick and let the taste of the fish come through. The fish itself seemed very fresh and was still delicious later as leftovers. The fries are seasoned specially to compliment the fish.
Other fish combos with fries, coleslaw, hush puppies and a 20-ounce drink include 10 catfish nuggets for $7.99, flounder for $7.99, mullet for $8.99, and 20 shrimp for $10.99. Large combos include tilapia or flounder plus 10 shrimp for $12.99, and catfish or mullet plus shrimp for $13.99.
We only tried the House Hot boneless wings; the sauce was good but the chicken was nothing special. They do seem like a good bargain though, at $3.79 for five pieces, up to $49.99 for 100 pieces. Next time I would order the regular bone-in kind, as it's a better deal than what is essentially chicken nuggets with sauce (the same as any place that offers "boneless wings").
They also sell the wings as a family deal with large fries and a 2-liter drink for another $4 or $5. Or you can get a fish and wings combo with one piece of whiting, tilapia, catfish or mullet plus six wings for about $9. The chicken tenders were just acceptable.
I ordered from the laminated menu on the counter and didn't realize that the "More" part was mostly on the other side, so you're on your own for how the salads, Philly subs, burgers, sandwiches, pork chops and fried rice taste. A ham or turkey salad is $5.99, Philly subs and burgers are $4.99, a fish or chicken sandwich is $3.99, and fried rice is about $6.
If you're looking for fresh fish fried up Southern style, Fish and More is a great place to get a quick lunch or dinner.
When I asked what most people order, I was told, "We're famous for our fish." So I'd stick with that.
