Gig Guide
FRIDAY AT THE CRAZY BULL
Local favorites Back City Woods bring their country-comes-to-town blend of foot stomping Americana back to Macon for a hometown performance. If you've been around the Middle Georgia music scene for a few years, you already know why the Atlanta Braves chose them as their band of the year last year. Another exciting wrinkle in this performance is the fairly recent addition of bassist Danny Davis, aka the Captain, a seasoned performer in his own right who will most certainly add another layer to their live show that should not be missed. Nashville's Frazier band also will be making their first appearance in Macon. 9:30 p.m. $5.
Jazz and Arts on Riverdale
SATURDAY ON RIVERDALE DRIVE
One of the sure signs that fall has arrived in Macon is Jazz and Arts on Riverdale, an annual festival that celebrates local art and good music on one of the city's most picturesque streets, just off Ridge Avenue. This year's 12th annual festival will feature music from the Blue Hound Quartet, Robert Lee Coleman & Fire and Ice, the JAM All Stars and Bumpin' the Mango. They'll provide the soundtrack as attendees are able to peruse local artistic fare at the booths that line the street in front of historic homes and under trees changing to their autumn colors. Noon-6 p.m. Free.
Big Bird Bash
SATURDAY AT THE HUMMINGBIRD STAGE AND TAPROOM
This year's Big Bird bash is bigger and better than ever. The evening kicks off with a beer Olympics and something called the "Hummingbird 5X," which combines drinking copious amounts of booze with competitive running -- two activities that are apparently not mutually exclusive. If you're still alive and kicking after all that, there's a great lineup of music that starts early and goes late into the night, including Far From Over, Some Kids, Tash and the Boys, the Walking Guys, Dirty Doves and Dirty Sound Professors. And if all that activity makes you hungry, Outlaw Barbeque will be out back slinging sandwiches. Event starts at 4 p.m./Music at 7 p.m. $10.
The Four Tops
SATURDAY AT THE GRAND OPERA HOUSE
The musical legacy of the Four Tops is undeniable. These guys have been in it to win it since their breakout hit, "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'" in 1964. In the half century that has passed since their first hit, they have had no less than 24 top 40 hits, easily making them one of the most successful Motown groups in the history of that venerable Detroit label. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and continues to tour incessantly, playing to packed houses across the country, a true testament to their lasting success and musical legacy. 7:30 p.m. $45-$61.
Kelsea Ballerini with Colby Dee
THURSDAY A THE COX CAPITOL THEATRE
Following the success of her country-pop breakout hit "Love Me Like You Mean It," Knoxville native Kelsea Ballerini is getting some serious attention. Taylor Swift has tweeted her support, she's been named one of CMT's "Next Women of Country Music" and she's made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry stage. Her debut album, "The First Time," features Ballerini's songwriting across every track, in a style that "radiates positivity while exploring all facets of the human experience." Hometown hero and rising country star Colby Dee will get the night started. Doors 7 p.m./Show 8 p.m. $15-$400.
