TASTE BUZZ: Urban Cup helps soothe your sweet tooth – hot or cold
If you enjoy self-serve frozen yogurt but you want a more grown-up atmosphere, the new Urban Cup at The Shoppes at River Crossing was made for you.
Sure, kids are welcome, but the woodsy decor and chic metal furniture says “quiet date night” louder than it does “kids running around and making a lot of noise.” The set up is similar to other frozen yogurt shops: a wall of spigots with every two flavors combining in the middle to make a swirl.
Urban Cup keeps 12 flavors on the lineup: Euro tart can be swirled with pink lemonade sorbet, island banana matches up with Hawaiian pineapple, butter pecan with cinnamon roll, cake batter and strawberry shortcake, apple pie and sugar free vanilla, and orchard cherry and fudge brownie batter.
Toppings are pretty standard with the addition of more fresh fruit than usual. Watermelon, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, bananas and peaches are available most of the time, with melon, pineapple, strawberries, grapes, kiwi and apples listed on their website.
Candy toppings include KitKat, Andes mints, Butterfinger, Heath bar, peachy rings, Nerds, Reese’s cups, Reese’s pieces, Sour Patch Kids, fizzy candy, gummy worms and gummy bears.
Cookie toppings include Oreo, Nutter Butter, Nilka wafers, brownies and cookie dough. There’s also sprinkles, mandarin oranges, cheesecake bites, chocolate chips, chocolate sprinkles, granola, peanuts, graham crackers, coconut flakes and marshmallows. At the end, there are three squirt bottles for chocolate syrup, caramel syrup and peanut butter syrup.
There’s also a self-serve bean-to-cup coffee machine that normally makes espresso, mochas, mochachinos, hot chocolate, lattes and cappuccinos, but it was out of order the day we visited. When the weather gets cooler, this will be a nice option when your date still wants yogurt but you want something warm.
Urban Cup yogurt is 59 cents an ounce -- a little higher than some of the local chains but lower than one other. It’s in a great location for après shopping and their outdoor seating is perfect for watching people shopping. It’s locally owned, staffed by friendly folks like Kenzie, and is a labor of love.
