Gig Guide
Bootz and Katz
FRIDAY AT THE HUMMINGBIRD STAGE AND TAPROOM
Bootz and Katz. Boom. Tick. Bass and hat. Boots and cats, Bootz and Katz. Beeeeees. This group, which combines a DJ/producer with live instrumentation (“livetronica,” to the uninformed), has been bringing bass-based dance music to the local masses since 2013. They’ll be bringing it down to the Bird on Friday, doling out musical remedies to cure your back-to-school-syllabus-week blues. 10:30 p.m. $5.
“Freddie for a Day” AIDS benefit with Great White Lion Snake
SATURDAY AT THE LIBRARY BALLROOM
First of all: Great White Lion Snake? That’s a great band name. I bet you wish you’d thought of that. They’ll be headlining this tribute to the late Freddie Mercury (of Queen fame) on what would have been the singer’s 69th birthday. Better yet, this is a benefit show, and proceeds will go to The HOPE Center of the North Central Health District and Sisterhood, a local HIV prevention and resource for women. Also joining in the fun will be Campbell Airlines and the Legenderry Big Hairy Monster, playing all your favorite Queen hits. 8:30 p.m. $10 donation.
Labor Day Festival for Strings Closing Concert
MONDAY AT MERCER UNIVERSITY’S FICKLING HALL
The McDuffie Center for Strings’ Labor Day Festival is “an intensive, hands-on, three-day workshop with center faculty,” where high school seniors get the opportunity to participate in master classes and rehearsals. Following the immersive experience, these students will present their talent to the public in a closing concert that also will feature performances by Robert McDuffie, Ward Stare, Amy Schwartz Moretti and the MCS Ensemble. 3 p.m. Free.
JJ Grey and Mofro
WEDNESDAY AT THE COX CAPITOL THEATRE
Self-described as blending Cropper-esque soul with George Clinton-style funk, roots rockers JJ Grey and Mofro take in bits and pieces of the music of the American South, churn them around in the ol’ tank, and dump them out as something that resembles a musical gumbo -- ostensibly straddling the line between the city and the country, sin and salvation. It’s a band that has to be seen live to be fully appreciated. The last time Mofro rolled through Macon, they packed the house, so be sure to get your tickets early. This time around, they’ll be joined by neo-roots tune-sters out of Virginia, the Last Bison. Doors: 7 p.m./Show: 8 p.m. $20-$520.
Jazz is Phish
THURSDAY AT THE COX CAPITOL THEATRE
Inspired by the popular instrumental tribute to the Grateful Dead, Jazz is Dead, Jazz is Phish takes the framework of Phish’s songs and sets out on adventure from there, improvising and exploring their limitless potential. Knock the stiff out of your spine and get ready to do the noodle, because it’s gonna be jammy, it’s gonna be jazzy. It’ll also be a star-studded affair, as the band is composed of folks associated with acts like Pretty Lights, Dave Matthews, the Sun Ra Arkestra, Snarky Puppy and Victor Wooten. Doors: 8 p.m./Show: 9 p.m. $12-$15.
