Out & About

BYAS: From art shows to donut holes, check out these 4 fun events this weekend

I’m issuing a last call for several fun events in the midstate. Catch them while you can!

ART OF THE ACADEMICS

The August exhibition at the 567 Center for Renewal on Cherry Street in downtown Macon features works by faculty from Mercer University, Wesleyan College and Middle Georgia State University. Artwork in the exhibition, which opened with a “meet the artists” reception this month, is on display and available for purchase until 4 p.m. today.

“THE MARK OF THE PENCIL”

This is the last weekend to see -- and purchase -- new, original colored pencil drawings by polymath, Mark Ballard. The local artist, designer, decorator, speaker, author, columnist, chef and television personality is presenting his first official art show in more than 25 years. The exhibition, sponsored by Spa Medical and Vein Specialists of the South, has been featured at the downtown gallery of the Macon Arts Alliance all this month. It closes Saturday, and can be seen 11 a.m.-5 p.m. today and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

GLAZIN’ A TRAIL

Before heading off to see Mark Ballard’s exhibition Saturday, help raise money for at-risk kids and youth at the Methodist Home for Children and Youth by participating in the Glazin’ a Trail 5k Donut Run. Dubbed “Run for Donuts,” the event lets you select between racing to the halfway point and eating six donuts before heading back to the finish line or enjoying one donut after running/walking the entire distance to complete the race in the traditional fashion. Participants receive donuts, race bags, T-shirts, prizes and more.

If, for some reason, you are unable to run, the Methodist Home is offering a virtual race. Just register at the website (http://glazinthet rail5k.sitey.me/) and run your own 5k in honor of the official Glazin’ a Trail race. The bonus with this choice is that you still receive the T-shirt and other race day accessories mentioned above.

This family-friendly event is open also to runners ages 10 and younger, who can join the Munchkin Mile Race. They appropriately enjoy complimentary donut holes upon completion of their race.

The Glazin’ a Trail 5K Donut Run starts at Thomson Middle School in Centerville at 7:30 a.m. Call 478-751-2898 for information.

LAST SUNDAY AT THE BIG HOUSE

Round out your weekend with a relaxing afternoon at The Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House during its Last Sunday concert. Bring a chair and “chill,” while enjoying free music on the grounds. The jamming starts at 2 p.m. Call 478-471-5551 for details.
