Gig Guide
Aaron Lee Tasjan with Widow Pills
Friday at the Hummingbird Stage and Taproom
Aaron Lee Tasjan has found himself in a number of bands over the years — bands as diverse as the New York Dolls, Drivin’ N Cryin’ and Alberta Cross — but he’s always considered himself a songwriter first and foremost. With that in mind, he quite literally decided to “move out to East Nashville and write a song about a train.” But don’t pin him as your typical East Nashvillian country crooner. His style is wide-ranging, and he’s one of the most talented young songwriters around these days. Locals Widow Pills make their return to the stage after a long hiatus to open the show. 10 p.m. $5.
Buddy Greene
Friday at the Cox Capitol Theatre
Mariah Carey is a lot like Buddy Greene in that they’ve both written the biggest earworms of Christmas songs in modern memory, “All I Want for Christmas is You” and “Mary Did You Know?” respectively. What makes Buddy a bit more special (at least locally) is that he’s from Macon. He’s also regarded as one of Nashville’s best harmonica players and he got his start playing with the Snow Man himself, Jerry Reed. Greene’s show in Macon is a yearly tradition that is guaranteed to bring on the Christmas spirit. Doors: 6 p.m./Show: 7 p.m. $20-$25.
John Berry
Friday at the Grand Opera House
John Berry is back in Macon at the Grand Opera House for what has become an annual holiday favorite. Berry, who is known for a strong string of hits, including “Your Love Amazes Me,” “Standing on the Edge of Goodbye” and “I Think About It All the Time,” is perhaps best known for his Christmas tour, which began 17 years ago after the release of his enormously successful “O Holy Night” album and its hit, the eponymous title track. According to Berry, the annual event is close to his heart, allowing him to share his faith and “his walk with Christ, (where) his calling has been to share God’s love with his audience.” 7:30 p.m. $38.
Reverend Horton Heat with Unknown Hinson and Lucky Tubb
Saturday at the Cox Capitol Theatre
Jim Heath, fearless leader of Reverend Horton Heat, reckons that he’s a “time-travelling space-cowboy on an endless interstellar musical tour.” Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmeister said of Jim, “go see him or I’ll kill you!!” Now that Lemmy has passed on to the Great Gig in the Sky, that statement seems to ring a little more true. Somehow he might be watching, ready to throw an empty Jack Daniels bottle from on high at those who disobey. So, go to this show. If you don’t, you might die. Lemmy is watching. The psychobilly Dracula freakshow that is Unknown Hinson will be there, too, along with Lucky Tubb. Doors 7 p.m./Show 8 p.m. $22-$25.
Michael Cera Palin, Kudzu Kids and Hindsight
Tuesday at Fresh Produce Music Hall
“Hey Elliot, I wanna make more interesting punky/emo music with people. Would you wanna start a project that sounds kinda like that?” And so Michael Cera Palin began, though I assume the name came later. They’re just three boys with a penchant for hanging out in basements (ostensibly their mothers’) making some noise. Joining the show is Kudzu Kids, a couple of kids from Jasper that kinda sound like Mazzy Star covering the Moldy Peaches. Local punkers Hindsight open. 7 p.m.
