1962 Pop Rock Classic From One of the ‘Greatest TV Stars' Came Out 23 Years Before His Tragic Death

Ricky Nelson was an iconic singer and actor who was named one of the "50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time" by TV Guide back in 1996. He got his start in The Adventures of Ozzieand Harriet at age eight, then he went on to co-star with legends like John Wayne and Dean Martin in Rio Bravo.

Nelson was a famous singer as well, putting out hits like "Poor Little Fool," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart and helped earn him a Golden Globe nomination. Another excellent song of his, "It's Up To You," was recorded 64 years ago today. The hit, which was written by Jerry Fuller, ended up reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the easy listening chart.

Many fans believe Nelson is an often-overlooked influence in rock and roll, with one commenter on Reddit saying that he "helped destigmatize rock as well as forge the sub-genre of rockabilly. He sold countless records, provided a voice and icon to his generation, and influenced so many musicians who followed after. Unfortunately, he was overshadowed and is often overlooked today despite his many achievements."

Between 1957 and 1973, Nelson had 54 songs make the Billboard Hot 100. 17 of those songs were top ten hits. This earned him a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Some of his other popular songs included "Garden Party" and "Hello Mary Lou (Goodbye Heart)."

Unfortunately, Nelson ended up dying young in a tragic accident. In 1985, he embarked on a three-stop tour in the US, performing in Florida and Alabama before heading to a New Year's Eve celebration in Dallas. However, the plane that he was on crashed in Texas, killing seven of the nine people on board. This included Nelson, his fiancée, and several band members. Only the two pilots survived.
