Maconites have multiple opportunities to support a local nonprofit that serves homeless people in Middle Georgia while honoring the legacy of one of Macon’s most legendary musicians.

The Skydog Music Festival is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. this Sunday, Nov. 21 at Central City Park (115 Willie Smokie Glover Drive).

The annual event celebrates the birthday, life and music of Duane Allman, one of the founding members of the Allman Brothers Band who is widely considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time. An early adopter and innovator of the slide guitar, Allman — nicknamed Skydog — died in 1971 at age 24 after a motorcycle crash in Macon.

The event is free to the public, but organizers ask that attendees bring 10 or more personal hygiene items from the following list to donate to the Daybreak Day Resource Center in Macon, run by Depual USA. Donations should be dropped off at Daybreak (174 Walnut Street, Macon, GA 31201):

  • Shampoo
  • Body wash
  • Conditioner
  • Bug spray
  • Spray deodorant
  • Sturdy backpack
  • Paper towels
  • Toilet paper
  • White distilled vinegar
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • 13 or 33 gallon trash bags
  • Adult ankle and crew socks

“That’s all it takes to be a part of five hours of celebration and support for others less fortunate. Please bring your goods, coolers, blankets, friends, family and shades for Skydog 75 — our 16th year of watching the Middle Georgia Community give like no other community gives!” the organization wrote in a Facebook post.

Daybreak provides housing and support services to approximately 100 men and women every weekday.

“This is the concert that brings people together, they aren’t just coming for their own enjoyment but to bring the community together just like music does” said Sister Theresa Sullivan, director of Daybreak, Depaul USA. “At Central City Park, people can safely enjoy the gift of music and being together as a community.”

Share the Love campaign

Middle Georgians can also donate to Daybreak through the Subaru of Macon car dealership (4775 Riverside Drive) from now until Jan. 3. According to a press release, Subaru will donate $250 to Daybreak for each vehicle purchased or leased.

Over the past four years, Subaru has donated more than $90,000 to Daybreak for ongoing operations.

“I am deeply honored that Subaru has selected Depaul USA’s Daybreak program as its local beneficiary for the Share the Love Campaign,” said Charles W. Levesque, president and executive director of Depaul USA. “Subaru is deeply invested in the Macon community and we look forward to partnering with the great team at the Macon dealership to raise funds for the Daybreak Day Resource Center.”
