Over $100,000 in drugs seized as part of operation in Muscogee County
The first phase of an operation conducted by the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office along with other state and federal agencies resulted in the arrests of 13 people and over $100,000 in drugs seized, the MCSO announced Monday.
Operation No Compromise led to the seizure of $126,321 in drugs, 19 firearms (two reported stolen), 14 vehicles and over $101,000 in U.S. currency, according to Muscogee County Sheriff Greg Countryman.
Countryman said the operation was a roughly three-month-long investigation with arrests happening, he believes, Jan. 9.
Investigators, during the operation, worked 16-hour shifts on average investigating the case, according to Countryman.
“Growing up in south Columbus, as a kid, it was normal to hear your parents say, ‘Wherever you act up, you get tore up.’ That’s my philosophy when it comes to how we fight crime and deal with criminal activity,” Countryman said.
Don Kelly, district attorney for the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit, said the 13 people arrested have had their probable cause hearing in Magistrate Court, and the cases have been transferred to Superior Court. They face charges ranging from drug trafficking to various drug and gun charges.
“We will be prosecuting these individuals to make sure they’re all held responsible for their actions,” Kelly said.
Drugs seized in the operation included 46 grams of fentanyl with an estimated value of $13,800, according to the MCSO.
Michael Mayer, assistant special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Atlanta, said illicit fentanyl “continues to plague our communities with overdose and poisoning deaths.”
When speaking about the fentanyl seized in the operation, Mayer said, “If you step back behind that, those are lives saved.”
Mayer said 2 milligrams of fentanyl is a potential lethal dose.
The two main drivers of fentanyl trafficking are Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) and the Sinaloa cartel, according to Mayer.
Investigators also seized 2.2 pounds of cocaine (estimated value of $97,070), 2.5 pounds of marijuana (estimated value of $11,285), 101 hydrocodone pills (estimated value of $2,020) and 105 grams of THC (estimated value of $2,100).
Countryman said phase two of the operation will consist of arresting other people who they did not get in the first phase.
Other agencies involved in the operation were: the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Russell County Sheriff’s Office, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, DEA and Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
