What are the best high schools in Middle Georgia? U.S. News releases annual rankings

U.S News & World Report has released its list of the best high schools in the country. Here’s where Middle Georgia’s high schools ranked in the list of 414 schools.

According to the reports, the methodology focuses on college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rates.

For the 2022 rankings, the magazine used data from the 2020-21 school year to assess nearly 24,000 public high schools.

Bibb County

In Macon, Howard High School was ranked no. 1 with a 83% graduation rate, a 15.9 college readiness score, and an enrollment of 1,210. In the overall Georgia ranking, the school ranked no. 137.

Here’s where Macon’s high schools ranked. Schools in the bottom 25% did not receive an individual ranking:

  • Central High School: 82% graduation rate, 24.7 college readiness, an enrollment of 925, ranked No. 151
  • Rutland High School: 78% graduation rate, 11.8 college readiness, an enrollment of 924, ranked No. 272
  • Northeast High School: 80% graduation rate, 3.6 college readiness, an enrollment of 714, ranked No. 311-414
  • Southwest High School: 68% graduation rate, 4.0 college readiness, an enrollment of 790, ranked No. 311-414
  • Westside High School: 71% graduation rate, 10.8 college readiness, an enrollment of 1,030, ranked No. 311-414.

Houston County

Houston County High School was the top-ranked school in Houston County with a 98% graduation rate, 29.5 college readiness score, and an enrollment of 2,006. Houston is ranked No. 48 in the state.

Here’s where Houston County’s high schools ranked. Schools in the bottom 25% did not receive an individual ranking.

  • Veterans High School: 97% graduation rate, 31.4 college readiness, an enrollment of 1,776, ranked No. 60.
  • Perry High School: 93% graduation rate, 24.3 college readiness, an enrollment of 1,433, ranked No. 103.
  • Northside High School: 91% graduation rate, 17.1 college readiness, an enrollment of 1,936, ranked No. 183.
  • Warner Robins High School: 88% graduation rate, 17.0 college readiness, an enrollment of 1,664, ranked No. 219.

  • Baldwin County High School: 85% graduation rate, 6.2 college readiness, enrollment of 1,247, ranked No. 311-414

  • Bleckley County High School: 99% graduation rate, 14.8 college readiness, enrollment of 633, ranked No. 77

  • Crawford County High School: 78% graduation rate, 7.7 college readiness, enrollment of 489, ranked No. 256

  • Jones County High School: 88% graduation rate, 3.8 college readiness, enrollment of 1,563, ranked No. 311-414

  • Mary Persons High School: 92% graduation rate, 20 college readiness, enrollment of 1,212, ranked No. 104

  • Peach County High School: 88% graduation rate, 4.5 college readiness, enrollment of 984, ranked No. 200

  • Twiggs County High School: 85% graduation rate, N/A college readiness, enrollment of 206, ranked No. 311-414

  • Wilkinson County High School: 94% graduation rate, 7.2 college readiness, enrollment 376, ranked No. 291

Methodology

The rankings, according to U.S. News, are based on measurements of:

  • College readiness (30%), defined by participation and performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.

  • Math and reading proficiency (20%), defined by results from the state’s standardized tests.

  • Math and reading performance (20%), defined by results from the state’s standardized test compared to predicted results from the school’s demographics.

  • Underserved student performance (10%), is defined by how well Blacks, Hispanics, and students from low-income families performed on state tests compared to those who aren’t considered underserved.

  • Curriculum breadth (10%).

  • Graduation rate (10%).
