Area football fans make their selection for player of the week
Cory Munson was selected by readers of The Telegraph and Macon.com as the player of the week Wednesday.
The junior place-kicker made two field goals Friday, including a 59-yarder that forced overtime, in the Eagles’ loss to Lee County.
The other nominees were Jarius Burnett (Warner Robins), Josiah Cotton (Mount de Sales), Deondre Duehart (Stratford), Cody Farr (Covenant), Chris Gibson (Peach County), Antonio Gilbert (Peach County), Adrian Hardwick (Mount de Sales), Tyler Jordan (Stratford) and Titus Moore (FPD).
Volleyball update
Mount de Sales knocked off Fellowship 3-1 on Tuesday in the GHSA Class 1A volleyball playoffs.
The Cavaliers won the first set 25-16 but lost the second set 29-27. They bounced back to win the next two sets 25-20 and 25-21.
Mount de Sales moves on to the semifinals Saturday.
Also Tuesday, Houston County lost to Effingham County in Class 6A, while Veterans lost to Whitewater in Class 5A, and Perry lost to Northside-Columbus in Class 4A.
Softball update
There is going to be a large contingent of teams headed to Columbus next week for the softball Elite Eight.
Houston County, Jones County, Perry, Rutland, Tattnall Square, Stratford and FPD all advanced Wednesday.
In Class 6A, Houston County swept Lakeside-Evans 13-0 and 16-3. In Class 5A, Jones County swept McIntosh 7-3 and 9-0. In Class 4A, Perry swept Thomson 14-5 and 10-9. In Class 3A, Rutland swept Appling County 3-2 and 1-0. In Class 1A, Tattnall Square swept Landmark Christian 12-0 and 15-0, while Stratford swept Brookstone 6-1 and 6-3, and FPD swept Darlington 2-0 and 18-8.
Also in Class 1A, Mount de Sales is still alive after splitting with Mount Pisgah on Wednesday. Mount lost the first game 4-1 but won the second 6-2. The two teams will play their third game Thursday.
In Class 3A, Peach County lost 6-0 and 14-0 to Worth County.
