Sony Michel taking handoffs during Georgia's Wednesday practice
It only took three practices for Sony Michel to return to drill work.
Michel, who sustained an open fracture to his left forearm in a July 3 ATV accident, was seen taking handoffs from quarterbacks Brice Ramsey and Jacob Eason in practice. Michel was working in with Nick Chubb and Brendan Douglas, while running backs Tae Crowder, Elijah Holyfield, Brian Herrien and Prather Hudson took handoffs from Greyson Lambert and Sam Vaughn.
Michel was limited in practice and did not participate in bag drills. He was seen wearing a wrap instead of the bulky brace he was previously wearing on his arm.
Michel’s status for the season opener against North Carolina is still uncertain as he continues to recover. In Georgia’s first two preseason practices, Michel stayed off to the side to do conditioning work with director of sports medicine Ron Courson.
Michel led Georgia in rushing a season ago with 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns, mostly as the lead back once Chubb went down with his significant knee injury against Tennessee.
While Michel took handoffs, Shaquery Wilson (bone bruise) was once again not participating in practice.
On the defensive side, head coach Kirby Smart was upset with his players during a pursuit drill. He yelled at the first team for having too many men on the field, making them run off and correct their personnel before coming back on.
After the second team completed the personnel drill, Smart yelled at outside linebackers Chuks Amaechi and D’Andre Walker for “not getting a single assignment right.” Smart then told both players to head to the bench after their mistakes.
